Lake Huron ( ) is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Alcona County ( ) is a county of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 10,167. Its county seat is Harrisville. Alphabetically it is the first county in Michigan; as its flag states, it is the "First of 83". History The county was created by the state legislature on April 1, 1840. It was at first named Negwegon County, after the name of a well-known Chippewa chief, also known as "Little Wing". He was honored as having been an American ally against the British in the War of 1812. It was renamed to Alcona County on March 8, 1843, after a neologism created by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft from parts of words from Native American languages, plus Arabic, Greek and Latin. Harrisville Township is a civil township of Alcona County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,348 at the 2010 census. Harrisville Township surrounds the city of Harrisville, but the two are administered autonomously. Haynes Township is a civil township of Alcona County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 722 at the 2010 census. Communities *Alcona is an unincorporated community located along the shores of Lake Huron in the northern portion of the township a . It was first settled around 1858 by Canadian fisherman William Hill, and the community was originally called The Cove. It was renamed Alcona after the name of the county, which was devised by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft as an Indian word that means "beautiful plain." A post office was established on January 9, 1867.
