Black Gut
Black Gut (known locally as "The Gut") is a U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map accessed March 23, 2019 distributary connecting the Susquehanna River to Hartman Run in York County, Pennsylvania in the United States. It was formerly a southeast flowing branch of the Conewago Creek bifurcation where it had once separated Brunner and Lowe's Island from mainland York County in East Manchester Township, joining the Susquehanna at the village of Saginaw. This delta no longer exists due to expansion of the Brunner Island Steam Electric Station. Another branch, known as the River Gut, ran 0.5 miles (0.80 km) from the gut to the Susquehanna. This branch had separated Brunner and Lowe's Island before it was eventually filled in, joining both islands into one. Distributary
A distributary, or a distributary channel, is a stream that branches off and flows away from a main stream channel. Distributaries are a common feature of river deltas. The phenomenon is known as river bifurcation. The opposite of a distributary is a tributary, which flows ''towards'' and joins another stream. Distributaries are often found where a stream approaches a lake or an ocean. They can also occur inland, on alluvial fans, or where a tributary stream bifurcates as it nears its confluence with a larger stream. In some cases, a minor distributary can divert so much water from the main channel that it can later become the main route. River Bifurcation
River bifurcation (from la, furca, fork) occurs when a river flowing in a single stream separates into two or more separate streams (called distributaries) which then continue downstream. Some rivers form complex networks of distributaries, typically in their deltas. If the streams eventually merge again or empty into the same body of water, then the bifurcation forms a river island. River bifurcation may be temporary or semi-permanent, depending on the strength of the material that is dividing the two distributaries. For example, a mid-stream island of soil or silt in a delta is most likely temporary, due to low material strength. A location where a river divides around a rock fin, e.g. a volcanically formed dike, or a mountain, may be more lasting as a result of higher material strength and resistance to weathering and erosion. Brunner Island Steam Electric Station
Brunner Island Steam Electric Station is a coal-fired, alternatively natural gas-powered electrical generation facility in York County, Pennsylvania. It occupies most of the area of the eponymous island on Susquehanna River. The power plant has three major units, which came online in 1961, 1965, and 1969, with respective generating capacities of 334 MW, 390 MW, and 759 MW (in winter conditions). In addition, three internal combustion generators (2.8 MWe each) were installed in 1967. Talen Energy will stop coal use at the plant in 2028. Environmental impact PPL, the owner of the plant at the time, announced in 2005 that it would begin to install scrubbers at the plant and that installation would be complete by 2009. The scrubbers, PPL says, are intended to annually remove 100,000 tons of sulfur.
