Black Feminist Future
Black Feminist Future is a community initiative formed by members of the African American feminist community, with the aim of amplifying the power of black women and girls in community organizing and online engagement. The group was formed in reaction to the aftermath of a police shooting at Ferguson, Missouri in 2014. In the aftermath of the shooting of Korryn Gaines, Black Feminist Future urged people across the country to build altars to honor black women. Initiatives In wake of the 2016 United States Presidential election, the group launched an initiative named "Freedom Dreams: Black Feminist Visioning Our Political Future". The initiative includes making "visioning salons" to build vision and movement that centers the African-American feminist lives. The aim is affecting politics and revising the laws which are believed to incorporate racial discrimination. Ferguson, Missouri
Ferguson is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. It is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. Per the 2020 census, the population was 18,527. Shooting Of Korryn Gaines
The shooting of Korryn Gaines occurred on August 1, 2016, in Randallstown, Maryland, near Baltimore, resulting in the death of Gaines, a 23-year-old woman, and the shooting of her son, who survived. According to the Baltimore County Police Department, officers sought to serve Gaines a warrant in relation to an earlier traffic violation. She had refused to vacate her vehicle or show her driver's license, and resisted arrest. Immediately after the first officer entered her home to serve the warrant, Gaines pointed a shotgun at him, prompting him to withdraw without shots being fired. Jessica Byrd
Jessica Byrd is a Black feminist activist best known for her work as Chief of Staff to Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, and her tenure as national training director at women's rights PAC EMILY's List. She currently works as a founding partner of Three Point Strategies, a political consulting firm aimed at the mission of getting more Black women into elected offices at all levels of government. She is an architect of the Movement for Black Lives Electoral Justice Project, and for its BREATHE Act bill aimed at redirecting federal funds away from the criminal justice system and towards community investment. #SayHerName is a social movement that seeks to raise awareness for Black Women victims of police brutality and anti-Black violence in the United States. The movement's name originally was created by the African American Policy Forum (AAPF). According to research, black women are 17% more likely to be stopped by police and 150% more likely to be killed than their white counterparts. #SayHerName aims to highlight the gender-specific ways in which Black women are disproportionately affected by fatal acts of racial injustice.
