Black Dress (painting)
Black Dress is a 1960 oil on canvas painting by Alex Katz (b. 1927) of his wife and frequent subject Ada Katz shown six times with the work employing cinematic effects. It also prominently features a repainting of a Katz portrait of the New York School poet James Schuyler in the work's backdrop. Today the work is held in the permanent collection of the Museum Brandhorst in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The work was loaned to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum The Solomon R. Oil On Canvas
Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. The advantages of oil for painting images include "greater flexibility, richer and denser colour, the use of layers, and a wider range from light to dark". But the process is slower, especially when one layer of paint needs to be allowed to dry before another is applied. The oldest known oil paintings were created by Buddhist artists in Afghanistan and date back to the 7th century AD. The technique of binding pigments in oil was later brought to Europe in the 15th century, about 900 years later. Alex Katz (born July 24, 1927) is an American figurative artist known for his paintings, sculptures, and prints. Ada Katz
Ada Katz (born May 30, 1928 in the Bronx, New York) is the wife and model of Alex Katz. Perhaps best known for appearing in over 1000 of her husband's paintings including '' Black Dress'' (1960), Katz was also a Biologist at Sloan Kettering, as well as one of the founders of the Eye and Ear Theater. Life Ada Katz (née Del Moro) was born on May 30, 1928 in the Bronx to Vincenzo Del Moro and Luisa Del Moro (née Verre), both of whom were from the town of Vasto, Italy. Her parents had both immigrated independently to New York City before reconnecting in the mid-1920s. Katz's father Vincenzo, a typesetter for a local newspaper, had been forced to leave Italy because of his opposition to the rise of Italian Fascism. Upon his arrival in New York, Del Moro found work for Il Progresso, an Italian-language newspaper based in lower Manhattan. New York School (art)
The New York School was an informal group of American poets, painters, dancers, and musicians active in the 1950s and 1960s in New York City. They often drew inspiration from surrealism and the contemporary avant-garde art movements, in particular action painting, abstract expressionism, jazz, improvisational theater, experimental music, and the interaction of friends in the New York City art world's vanguard circle. People Frank O'Hara was at the center of the group before his death in 1966. Because of his numerous friendships and his post as a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, he provided connections between the poets and painters such as Jane Freilicher, Fairfield Porter, and Larry Rivers (who was O'Hara's lover). James Schuyler
James Marcus Schuyler (November 9, 1923 – April 12, 1991) was an American poet. His awards include the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his 1980 collection ''The Morning of the Poem''. He was a central figure in the New York School and is often associated with fellow New York School poets John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, and Barbara Guest. Life and death James Marcus Schuyler was the son of Marcus Schuyler (a reporter) and Margaret Daisy Connor Schuyler. Born in Chicago, he spent his teen years in East Aurora, New York. After graduating high school, Schuyler attended Bethany College in West Virginia from 1941 to 1943, though he was not a very successful student; in a later interview, he recalled, "I just played bridge all the time." Schuyler moved to New York City in the late 1940s where he worked for NBC and first befriended W. H. Auden. The Brandhorst Museum was opened in Munich on 21 May 2009. It displays about 200 exhibits from collection of modern art of the heirs of the Henkel trust Udo and Anette Brandhorst.
