Billy Bitter
William Benz Bitter (born June 10, 1988) is an American former professional lacrosse player for the Charlotte Hounds and Denver Outlaws of the outdoor Major League Lacrosse from 2011-2013. Bitter was also drafted by Buffalo Bandits of the indoor National Lacrosse League. Bitter played college lacrosse for the University of North Carolina. Personal The son of Ward and Nancy Bitter, Bitter is one of 6 kids who all played lacrosse at the college level. His father, Ward Bitter II, is in the Boston College Hall of Fame for being an All-American lacrosse player at Boston College. Francis Bitter
Francis Bitter (July 22, 1902 – July 26, 1967) was an American physicist. Bitter invented the Bitter plate used in resistive magnets (also called Bitter electromagnets). He also developed the water cooling method inherent to the design of Bitter magnets. Prior to this development, there was no way to cool electromagnets, limiting their maximum flux density. Early life Francis Bitter was born in Weehawken, New Jersey. His father, Karl Bitter, was a prominent sculptor. Bitter entered the University of Chicago in 1919, but chose to leave his studies there in 1922 to visit Europe. He later transferred to Columbia University and graduated in 1925. He continued his studies in Berlin from 1925 to 1926 and received a PhD at Columbia in 1928. At Columbia, Bitter began his lifelong fascination with magnets. Friedrich August Georg Bitter
Friedrich August Georg Bitter (13 August 1873 – 30 July 1927) was a German botanist and lichenologist. Born in Bremen, he studied at the Universities of Jena, Munich and Kiel, earning his doctorate at the latter institution in 1896. Afterwards he performed assignments in Berlin. In his studies he was influenced by instructors such as Simon Schwendener (1829–1919), Friedrich Wilhelm Zopf (1846–1909) and Johannes Reinke (1849–1931). In 1905 he was named director of the botanical garden in Bremen. During the later part of his career he served as director of the botanical garden in Göttingen. He specialized in the botanical genus ''Solanum'', as evidenced by his ''Solana Africana'', a four-part monograph in which he provided descriptions of all known African ''Solanum'' species. In the field of lichenology, he conducted anatomical and developmental studies on the thallus of lichens. Johannes Bitter
Johannes Bitter (born 2 September 1982) is a German handball goalkeeper for HSV Hamburg. Club career Bitter started his senior career with SG VTB Altjührden in 1999, before moving to Wilhelmshavener HV three years later. After only one season in Wilhelmshaven, he signed with SC Magdeburg in 2003, with whom he won the EHF Cup. Following that success, Bitter eventually moved to HSV Hamburg in the summer of 2007. Karl Theodore Francis Bitter (December 6, 1867 – April 9, 1915) was an Austrian-born American sculptor best known for his architectural sculpture, memorials and residential work. Life and career The son of Carl and Henrietta Bitter, he was born in the municipal district Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus of Vienna. His early training took place at the Vienna ''Kunstgewerbeschule'' (the imperial school for the applied arts), and after that at the ''Kunstakademie'' (the Academy of Fine Arts). At the Academy, he studied with August Kühne and Edmund Heller. Upon his graduation, he was apprenticed to an architectural sculptor,. Karl Hermann Bitter (27 February 1813 – 12 September 1885) was a Prussian statesman and writer on music. Biography He was born at Schwedt, Province of Brandenburg, and studied law and cameralistics at Berlin and Bonn. He served as the plenipotentiary of Prussia on the Danube Commission from 1856 to 1860, was prefect of the Department of Vosges during the Franco-Prussian War. He later became minister of finance (1879), an office in which he displayed exceptional ability. He increased the indirect duties derived from the so-called tobacco monopoly and the tax on spirits and malt, and introduced the “Börsensteuer” (tax on the bourse). Peter von Bitter is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Toronto and he holds a post at the Royal Ontario Museum. Pieter de Bitter (15June 1666) was a 17th-century Dutch Republic, Dutch officer of the Dutch East India Company ( nl, Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, commonly abbreviated to VOC). Theodorus (Theo) Bitter (16 December 1916 – 13 February 1994 in The Hague) was a Dutch graphic artist, painter and draftsman. He also made monumental art, designed textiles, and illustrated books.
