Banach Space
In mathematics, more specifically in functional analysis, a Banach space (pronounced ) is a complete normed vector space. Thus, a Banach space is a vector space with a metric that allows the computation of vector length and distance between vectors and is complete in the sense that a Cauchy sequence of vectors always converges to a well-defined limit that is within the space. Banach spaces are named after the Polish mathematician Stefan Banach, who introduced this concept and studied it systematically in 1920–1922 along with Hans Hahn and Eduard Helly. Maurice René Fréchet was the first to use the term "Banach space" and Banach in turn then coined the term "Fréchet space." Errett Bishop
Errett Albert Bishop (July 14, 1928 – April 14, 1983) was an Americans, American mathematician known for his work on analysis. He expanded constructive analysis in his 1967 ''Foundations of Constructive Analysis'', where he Mathematical proof, proved most of the important theorems in real analysis by Constructivism (mathematics), constructive methods. Life Errett Bishop's father, Albert T. Bishop, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, ending his career as professor of mathematics at Wichita State University in Kansas. Although he died when Errett was less than 4 years old, he influenced Errett's eventual career by the math texts he left behind, which is how Errett discovered mathematics. Errett grew up in Newton, Kansas. Errett and his sister were apparent math prodigies. Bishop entered the University of Chicago in 1944, obtaining both the BS and MS in 1947. Robert Phelps
Robert Ralph Phelps (March 22, 1926 â€“ January 4, 2013) was an American mathematician who was known for his contributions to analysis, particularly to functional analysis and measure theory. He was a professor of mathematics at the University of Washington from 1962 until his death. Biography Phelps wrote his dissertation on subreflexive Banach spaces under the supervision of Victor Klee in 1958 at the University of Washington. Phelps was appointed to a position at Washington in 1962. In 2012 he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He was a convinced atheist.
