Bishopston, Bristol
Bishopston is a suburb of the city of Bristol in south west England. Bishopston is around Gloucester Road ( A38), the main northern arterial road in the city and Bishop Road. Politics Bishopston is in the Bristol West parliamentary constituency and is represented by Thangam Debbonaire of the Labour Party. It is split between the wards of Redland and Bishopston and Ashley Down. Bishopston, Swansea
Bishopston ( cy, Llandeilo Ferwallt, historically also ''Llanmerwallt'' and ''Llancyngur Trosgardi'') is a large village and community situated on the Gower Peninsula, west south west of the centre of Swansea in South Wales. It is partly within the Gower Peninsula Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The church, located at the head of Bishopston Valley, is dedicated to St Teilo who gives the village its Welsh name. Bishopston gives its name to the Bishopston Mudstone, a name used by geologists to refer to a rock formation with a widespread occurrence in south Wales. Etymology The name Bishopston originates from the Norman Conquest, although pre-Norman names for the town vary. One name was ''Llanmerwall'' (or Llanmerwallt), and is similar to the modern Welsh name. Two further names are recorded: ''Porthdulon'' (or ''Porthtulon''), possibly referring to the area of Caswell, and ''Llancyngur Trosgardi''. Bishopston ( cy, Llandeilo Ferwallt) is the name of an electoral ward in the City and County of Swansea, Wales. Most of the area is rural consisting of farmland and small villages. The ward is named after the village (and coterminous community) of Bishopston which falls within the ward. The electoral ward consists of some or all of the following areas: Barland Common, Caswell, Clyne Common, Bishopston, Manselfield, Murton, Oldway, in the parliamentary constituency of Gower. It is bounded by the Bristol Channel to the south; and the wards of: Pennard to the west; Fairwood to the north; and Mayals, West Cross and Newton to the east. Current Representation The Bishopston Ward is a single-member ward for the purposes of City and County of Swansea Council elections. Bishton
Bishton or Bishopston ( cy, Llangadwaladr Trefesgob or simply ''Trefesgob'') is a small rural community in the east of the city of Newport, South Wales. It lies in the Llanwern electoral district (ward) and contains the eastern end of Llanwern steelworks, the Underwood estate as well as Bishton itself. The population in the 2001 census was 2,181; dropping to 2,137 in 2011. The name is said to derive from "Bishop's Town", as the village has been alleged to be the sometime home of the Bishops of Llandaff. Owain Glyndŵr destroyed the palaces at Bishton and Llandaff, from which time the episcopal palace was moved to Mathern. Bishop John Pascall died here of the plague in 1361. Government The area is governed by the Newport City Council and the Bishton community council. Edward Bishop, Baron Bishopston
Edward Stanley Bishop, Baron Bishopston, (3 October 1920 – 19 April 1984) was a British Labour Party politician. Born in Bristol, Bishop was educated at South Bristol Central School, Merchant Venturers' Technical College and Bristol University. He was an aeronautical design draughtsman. He contested Bristol West in 1950, Exeter in 1951 and South Gloucestershire in 1955. Bishop was Member of Parliament for Newark from 1964 to 1979, when he lost the seat to the Conservative Richard Alexander. Bishop was an assistant government whip from 1966 to 1967, and Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 1974 to 1979. After he lost his seat, he was created a life peer as Baron Bishopston, ''of Newark in the County of Nottinghamshire'' on 21 May 1981. He was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom in 1977, Giving Him the Honorific Title "The Right Honourable" and after ennoblement the Post Nominal Letters "PC" for Life.
