Birgit Brüel
Birgit Brüel (born 6 October 1927 – died 23 February 1996) was a Danish singer and actress who participated in the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest. Brüel's professional career began in 1950 when she joined the Max Brüel Quartet as a jazz singer, and began training at the Danish Royal drama school. She married Brüel in 1951 and gave birth to twin daughters the following year (she also had one daughter from her first marriage, which had ended in divorce in 1949). During the 1950s she became well known as a theatre and screen actress, and between 1961 and 1966 she sang with the Danish Radio Jazz Group. In 1965, Brüel entered the Danish Eurovision selection, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, which she won with the song " For din skyld" ("For Your Sake"). She represented Denmark at the tenth Eurovision Song Contest, held on 20 March in Naples, where "For dyn skyld" finished in seventh place of the 18 entries. Ulla Pia Nielsen (17 February 1945 – 22 August 2020), known simply as Ulla Pia, was a Danish singer, best known internationally for her participation in the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest. Ulla Pia was born in Copenhagen, where she started her career as a vocalist with bands and orchestras. In the mid-1960s she was singing with jazz musician Finn Ziegler, and it was suggested in 1966 that she enter a song in the Danish Eurovision selection, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. She performed the song " Stop - mens legen er go'" ("Stop, While the Going's Good"), and to her surprise, emerged the clear winner. Denmark was represented by Ulla Pia, with the song "Stop – mens legen er go'", at the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 5 March in Luxembourg City. "Stop – mens legen er go'" was chosen as the Danish entry at the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix on 6 February. Danish broadcaster DR withdrew from Eurovision following the 1966 contest, and would not return to the fold until 1978. The reasons for the withdrawal are unclear, although it is believed that a new programme controller at DR did not consider the expense involved in Eurovision participation to represent value for money.
