Birdland (comic)
''Birdland'' is a creator-owned erotic comic book limited series created by Gilbert Hernandez. It was first published by Fantagraphics via their Eros Comix imprint between 1990 and 1991. The series features characters from the ''Love and Rockets'' series he devised along with his brothers Jaime and Mario but was marketed separately due to its highly explicit sexual content. Creation Hernandez was finding the ''Poison River'' arc of ''Love and Rockets'' to be difficult creatively and wanted to write something lighter. He also felt the Bush administration signified a swing towards conservatism in American society, shaping his decision to create "a wild sex romp without any violence" and "a sitcom with tits". Gilberto Hernández (born February 1, 1957), usually credited as Gilbert Hernandez and also by the nickname Beto (), is an American cartoonist. He is best known for his ''Palomar''/''Heartbreak Soup'' stories in '' Love and Rockets'', an alternative comic book he shared with his brothers Jaime and Mario. Early life Gilbert Hernández was born and grew up in Oxnard, California to a Mexican father and Texas-born mother. He had five brothers and one sister, raised by their mother and grandmother, as their father was rarely around. They were exposed to comic books early in life through their mother, who passed on her love of the medium to her children. Young Gilbert read all he could, with the exception of romance comics. The Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund (CLLDF) is a Canadian nonprofit organization, created in 1987 to protect the free speech rights of comics creators, publishers, retailers, and readers, by helping to cover legal expenses in the defense of cases where its directors feel those issues are at stake. History The Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund was begun by writer Derek McCulloch, Vancouver comics convention organizer Leonard S. Wong, student and community organizer Liz Schiller, and Paul Stockton of Strawberry Jam Comics to assist with the legal defense of Comic Legends, a Calgary, Alberta comic shop whose owners were charged with selling obscene materials.
