Binche Palace
Binche Palace (french: Château de Binche) is located in Binche in the Belgian province of Hainaut, Wallonia. The medieval castle and subsequent Renaissance palace served as residence for the counts of Hainaut, the dukes of Burgundy and the Habsburg rulers of the Netherlands. The most famous resident has been Mary of Hungary, governor of the Netherlands. It was one of the first renaissance palaces in the Low Countries and was intended to rival the French palace of Fontainebleau. The palace was destroyed by soldiers of king Henry II of France. Today, only some medieval walls and fundaments remain of the castle and palace. History Baldwin IV, Count of Hainaut, also known as Baldwin the Builder, constructed the first castle in Binche in the 12th century. Devereux is a Norman surname found frequently in Ireland, Wales, England and around the English-speaking world. The name may derive as a Norman French rendering of the Welsh name "''Dyfrig''" or "''Dubricius''". Baldwin IV (1108 – 8 November 1171) was count of Hainaut from 1120 to his death. Baldwin IV was the son of Count Baldwin III of Hainaut and Yolande de Wassenberg.Gislebertus (of Mons), ''Chronicle of Hainaut'', transl. Laura Napran, (The Boydell Press, 2005), 40. Also known as Baldwin the Builder, he purchased the property of Ath in 1158 and built the Burbant tower. The Royal Palace of Valsain ( es, Palacio Real de Valsain) is a former Spanish royal residence, which is now in ruins. It is located in Valsain in the Province of Segovia, in the Castile and León Autonomous region of central Spain. It is approximately from Segovia, and north of Madrid. The Trastamara kings of Castile already had a hunting lodge in Valsain. Boussu (; pcd, Boussu-dlé-Mont) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. As of January 1, 2006, Boussu had a population of 20,058. Mariemont, also Morlanwelz-Mariemont, is a former royal estate and hunting park in Belgium, created in the 16th century by Mary of Hungary, from whom it took its name. It was reconstructed several times through the centuries before being finally destroyed in 1794. The royal residences formerly on the site have long since been destroyed. Jacques du Broeucq (c.1505 – c.1584) was a sculptor and architect from Southern Netherlands, who is believed to have spent c. 1530-35 in Italy.
