Bimbo Rivas
Bittman John "Bimbo" Rivas (November 11, 1939 – May 21, 1992) was a Puerto Rican actor, community activist, director, playwright, poet, and teacher who lived in the Lower East Side of New York City. He also served in the U.S. Air Force. He was one of the pioneers of the Nuyorican Movement and was involved in the Nuyorican Poets Café. Life Bittman (Bimbo) Rivas got his nickname because of his birth name Bittman. He was teased as a child and called Bimbo, instead of Bittman. He later, as a teenager saw a movie where an elephant named Bimbo was loved and respected. At that moment he had decided to empower the name and made it his own. The name lasted, as he was from that point on known to everyone as Bimbo Rivas. Bimbo Rivas was much more down to earth and his journey led him to NYC's Lower East Side where he spent the rest of his life. The Lower East Side, sometimes abbreviated as LES, is a historic neighborhood in the southeastern part of Manhattan in New York City. Nuyorican Poets Café
The Nuyorican (Puerto Rican New Yorkers) Poets Cafe is a nonprofit organization in Alphabet City, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It is a bastion of the Nuyorican art movement in New York City, and has become a forum for poetry, music, hip hop, video, visual arts, comedy, and theater. Several events during the PEN World Voices festival are hosted at the cafe. Charas/El Bohio
CHARAS/El Bohio Community Center was a neighborhood organization and squatted community center in New York's East Village between 1979 and 2001. Background Public School 64, the 130,000-square-foot building in Manhattan's East Village that would become the CHARAS/El Bohio Community Center, was active between its completion in 1906 and its closure in 1977. It was designed in the French Renaissance Revival style by C.B.J. Snyder during a time when a population boom required schools. During New York's 1970s fiscal crisis, the surrounding neighborhood fell into disrepair. The building itself had become a drug house. Avenue C (Manhattan)
Avenue C is a north-south avenue located in the Alphabet City area of the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, east of Avenue B and west of Avenue D. It is also known as Loisaida Avenue. It starts at South Street, proceeding north as Montgomery Street and Pitt Street, before intersecting East Houston Street and assuming its proper name. Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre
The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater is a theater company based at the 47th Street Theater in New York City. It was founded as El Nuevo Círculo Dramatico (The New Drama Circuit) by Míriam Colón and Roberto Rodríguez. It was one of the first Puerto Rican theater companies to be founded and is credited with kickstarting the Hispanic and Puerto Rican theater scene in New York. The first production by the company was ''La Carreta'' (''The Oxcart'') in 1953, written by René Marqués and directed by founder Roberto Rodríguez.
