Bilton, Northumberland
Bilton is a hamlet in Northumberland, in England. It is situated near the River Aln, a short distance inland from the North Sea coast, close to Alnmouth. Alnwick is the nearest town. History During medieval times Bilton was larger; it is recorded as having 8 taxpayers in 1296 and had become a more substantial village by the 18th century. However, the village shrank in the 19th century, when several farms were amalgamated. Bilton was primarily an agricultural village; 17th century field systems are shown on a map of 1624. Coal mining is also recorded on Bilton Common in the 17th century. Bilton is a suburb of Rugby in Warwickshire, England, located about south-west of Rugby town centre. It is also a ward of the Borough of Rugby, which at the 2021 Census had a population of 6,544. Bilton (or Bilton-in-Holderness) is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately east of Hull city centre on the B1238 road and adjoining the village of Wyton. According to the 2011 UK census, Bilton parish had a population of 2,220, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 2,340. __NOTOC__ Bilton is a suburb of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England, situated to the north-east of the town centre. History Bilton was first recorded (as ''Billeton'') in the Domesday Book in 1086. The name is of Old English origin and means "farmstead of a man named Billa". Bilton was historically in the parish of Knaresborough in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It formed a township with Harrogate, and in 1866 the township of Bilton with Harrogate became a civil parish. When Harrogate became a municipal borough in 1894, Bilton remained outside the borough and became a separate civil parish. In 1896, Starbeck was separated from Bilton to form a new civil parish. In 1938 the civil parish was abolished, and most of Bilton was added to Harrogate. In 1848 the Leeds and Thirsk Railway was opened through Bilton, although no station was built there. Bilton-in-Ainsty is a village in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire in England. It lies about east of Wetherby and west of York. It is part of the civil parish of Bilton-in-Ainsty with Bickerton. Bilton had a population of 147 in 2006. Geography and communications The village is situated on the B1224 York to Wetherby road. New Bilton
New Bilton is a suburb of Rugby, Warwickshire, in England, situated to the west of the town centre. New Bilton is also a ward of the Borough of Rugby whose population at the 2021 census was 8,166. The area straddles the A428 main road, known locally as Lawford Road. The area was historically within the parish of Bilton (which has also been absorbed into Rugby) and was developed into a suburb during the Victorian era in connection with the local cement industry and brick making industry; the cement industry still continues but the brick making industry has since died out. In 1867 New Bilton became a separate ecclesiastical parish from Bilton, and the local church of St Oswald on Lawford Road was consecrated, later being enlarged in 1881. Bilton Grange is a preparatory school located in Dunchurch, near Rugby, Warwickshire. The present headmaster is Gareth Jones. The mansion which forms the main school was built in 1846 attached to an existing farmhouse and was a private family home. It was designed by the eminent designer and architect Augustus Welby Pugin for Captain Washington Hibbert, and is a Grade II* listed building. The first pupils were brought to the house by The Reverend Walter Earle in 1887. The brewhouse was converted into the school chapel in 1889 and classrooms were added in 1892. The school formally amalgamated with the neighboroughing Homefield Girls' School, with which it had long had a connection, in 1992 with Bilton Grange becoming co-educational and the Homefield School building becoming the Pre-Prep department for children aged 4 to 8. Bilton Hall is a Listed building, Grade II listed large English country house, country house near Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Bilton Hall is a 17th-century mansion house in the Bilton area of Rugby, Warwickshire which has been converted into residential apartments. It is a Grade I listed building. It was once the home of the poet and essayist Joseph Addison and of the sporting writer Charles James Apperley. History A manor on this site was inherited by John Trussell from his father William in 1481. After John's death in 1499, his daughter, Elizabeth Trussell became the ward of John de Vere, afterwards 15th Earl of Oxford. Elizabeth later became de Vere's second wife. The manor of Bilton was held by this family line for nearly 70 years. In 1574 Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, leased it to John, Lord Darcye, and in 1580 he sold it to John Shuckburgh, who immediately leased it to Edward Cordell. Bilton School (formerly Herbert Kay and Westlands School, and most recently Bilton High School) is a major secondary school with academy status for pupils aged 11–18 situated within the village of Bilton in Rugby, Warwickshire. There were 1,020 students on roll in the 2015-2016 school year, with 69 staff and 17 teaching assistants. In March 2016, the school was placed in special measures after an Ofsted inspection found it to be inadequate in every area except its sixth form, which followed a serious decline in examination results over the previous two years.- History The school was formerly two single-sex schools, Herbert Kay and Westlands.
