William Holden
William Holden (born William Franklin Beedle Jr.; April 17, 1918 – November 12, 1981) was an American actor, and one of the biggest box-office draws of the 1950s. Holden won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the film ''Stalag 17'' (1953) and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for the television film '' The Blue Knight'' (1973). Holden starred in some of Hollywood's most popular and critically acclaimed films, including ''Sunset Boulevard'' (1950), ''Sabrina'' (1954), ''Picnic'' (1955), ''The Bridge on the River Kwai'' (1957), ''The Wild Bunch'' (1969) and ''Network'' (1976). William Holden (7 April 1808 – 11 October 1897) was a journalist with the '' South Australian Register'', noted for his breadth of knowledge and diverse interests, and remembered as the "Riddler" in ''The Observer''. He retired as the longest-serving and oldest journalist in Australia. Early life Holden was born on 7 April 1808 in Chichester, Sussex, and emigrated with his family to the colony of South Australia in the ''Trusty'', arriving 15 May 1838. From 1841 to 1851 the Holden family lived at Hope Valley, where he opened a butcher's shop and store. The name "Hope Valley" was coined by him when, after fire destroyed his home, he felt optimistic rather than despondent. William Woods Holden
William Woods Holden (November 24, 1818 – March 1, 1892) was an American politician who served as the List of Governors of North Carolina, 38th and 40th governor of North Carolina. He was appointed by President of the United States, President Andrew Johnson in 1865 for a brief term and then elected in 1868. He served until 1871 and was the leader of the state's History of the United States Republican Party, Republican Party during the Reconstruction Era. Holden was the second governor in American history to be Impeachment in the United States, impeached, and the first to be removed from office through that process. His impeachment was politically motivated due to his suppression of the Ku Klux Klan. After Republicans lost the 1870 election, Democrats impeached him on eight charges for supposed actions during the Kirk–Holden war. He is the only North Carolina governor to have been impeached. William Holden (c. 1824 – June 3, 1884) was the 11th Lieutenant Governor of California, 1867–1871. Biography Holden was born in Kentucky. He studied law, attained admission to the bar in 1845, and practiced in Johnson County. He relocated to California in 1850, settled in Stanislaus County, and worked as a farmer and merchant in addition to practicing law. A Democrat, he became active in politics, and served in both the California State Assembly (1857-1858), (1865-1866), (1881-1882) and California State Senate (1858-1860), (1862-1864). In 1866, Holden ran successfully for Lieutenant Governor, and served from 1867 to 1871. William Paul Holden (September 7, 1889 - September 14, 1971) was an American right-handed Major League Baseball outfielder who played in 1913 and 1914 for the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds. Standing at and weighing 170 pounds, Holden made his big-league debut on September 11, 1913, at the age of 23. He was impressive in the 18 games he played in 1913, batting .302 in 53 at-bats, walking eight times and striking out five times. That success did not carry over into 1914, though. He started the season off with the Yankees, hitting .182 in 50 games with them. On July 6 of that year, he was sent to the Baltimore Orioles of the International League. On September 15 of that year, he was signed as a free-agent by the Reds, and in 28 at-bats with them he hit .214. He finished the season hitting .187. Bill Holden (born 1948 in Elgin, Illinois), is a teacher who embarked on a 2,100 mile (3,400 km) walk, from Arizona to Chicago, during 2005, hoping to raise $250,000 dollars to be donated to the American Diabetes Association so that a cure for juvenile diabetes can be found. William Holden (8 March 1923 – 14 March 2011) was a motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Holden rode for Southampton Saints (1950-1, 1957), Poole Pirates 1951–56, 1958) and England (1952). He won the Division 3 championship with Poole in 1951 and the following year won the Division 2 title with Poole. In 1955, he won a third title when Poole won Division 2 again. He is still regarded by some as one of the best riders ever to don the distinctive blue and white skull and crossbones race jacket. Holden was entered into the Poole Speedway Hall of Fame in 2008 having scored 1,599 points in 639 races.
