Cowangie, Victoria
Cowangie is a locality situated on the section of the Mallee Highway between Ouyen and the South Australian border in the Sunraysia region of Victoria, Australia. The place by road, is situated about 12 kilometres southeast from Tutye and 12 kilometres northwest from Danyo. The Post Office opened on 15 July 1912 when a regular mail service was provided by the opening of the railway from Ouyen to Murrayville a month earlier. Known as Kow Plains until 1913, the office closed in 1994. Thomas William Roper (born 6 March 1945) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Chatswood and attended North Sydney Boys High School before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Sydney University. From 1967 to 1968 he was National Aboriginal Affairs officer with the National Union of Australian University Students, moving to education vice-president from 1968 to 1970. in 1970 he became a tutor at La Trobe University's education school, before becoming an advisor for the federal Minister for Aboriginal Affairs in 1973. Vasey Houghton
William Vasey Houghton MLC (3 January 1921 – 11 January 2001), better known as Vasey Houghton, was an Australian politician, grazier, and conservationist. He was one of the longest-serving members of the Victorian State Parliament, spending eighteen years as a Member of the Legislative Council, nine of them on the front bench. Houghton is remembered for his work cleaning up HM Prison Pentridge and the Yarra River. Life Houghton was born in Melbourne, the son of solicitor William Sharwood Houghton and Doris Thackery. Thomas Anthony Darcy (18 May 1893 – 27 December 1979) was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1958 to 1970, representing the electorate of Polwarth. He was Minister of Water Supply and Minister of Mines in the Bolte government from 1964 to 1967. Darcy was born at Murroon, near Birregurra. Ian Winton Smith (born 25 November 1939) is a former Australian Liberal Party politician. He represented the Electoral district of Warrnambool in the State of Victoria as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from 1967 until 1983. He resigned to contest Liberal Party pre-selection unsuccessfully for the Federal Division of Wannon, even though he would have been required to resign from the State Parliament only if he had been successful in the pre-selection. Sir William John Farquhar "Black Jack" McDonald (3 October 1911 – 13 September 1995) was an Australian politician. He was born at Binnum in South Australia to grazier John Nicholson McDonald and Sarah McInnes, and attended the local state school and then Scotch College in Adelaide. He was a grazier in South Australia from 1930, moving to a sheep station near Neuarpurr in Victoria in 1935. On 15 August 1935 he married Evelyn Margaret Koch, with whom he had two daughters. He served with the AIF in World War II, and after his return served on Kowree Shire Council from 1946 to 1961 (president 1948–49). A member of the Liberal and Country Party, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1947 for Dundas. Defeated in 1952, he was re-elected in 1955 and elected Speaker.
