Biggenden is a rural town and locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Biggenden had a population of 845 people. Geography Biggenden is on the Isis Highway north-west of the state capital Brisbane, and west of Maryborough. History The name is derived from the Kabi word ''bigindhan'' meaning a ''place of stringybark''. Biggenden was founded in 1889 as a service centre to the short-lived goldrush towns of Paradise and Shamrock; and for coach passengers travelling west from Maryborough. The township, including the intriguingly named ''Live And Let Live Inn'', moved to a new location alongside the railway station when the rail line arrived in 1891. Biggenden Post Office opened on 16 May 1891. Biggenden Provisional school opened on 9 May 1892 becoming Biggenden State School in 1900. Degilbo Shire Council
The Shire of Biggenden was a local government area located in the northern catchment of the Burnett River, Queensland, Australia, south-southwest of the regional city of Bundaberg. The shire covered an area of , and existed as a local government area from 1905 until 2008, when it amalgamated with several other shires to become the North Burnett Region. Primary production is the most significant industry in the region with beef and dairy cattle being predominant. Other agricultural pursuits include grain crops, piggeries, peanuts, citrus and timber. The area is also rich in minerals. Biggenden Mine is located from Biggenden along the Isis Highway. Gold, bismuth and more recently magnetite have been extracted from the mine. North Burnett Region
The North Burnett Region is a local government area in Queensland, Australia in the northern catchment of the Burnett River. Established in 2008, it was preceded by several previous local government areas with histories extending back to the early 1900s. It has an estimated operating budget of A$32 million. Isis Highway
The Isis Highway is a state highway in southern Queensland, Australia. The highway is relatively short, and runs for in a north-east / south-west direction between Bundaberg North and the Burnett Highway at Ban Ban Springs. The Isis Highway links the sugar producing Bundaberg and Fraser Coast regions with the cattle farming districts of the North Burnett. The highway takes its name from the Isis River, which flows between Maryborough and Childers. The highway also passes through a significant amount of the former Isis Shire local government area, of which Childers was the administrative centre. Degilbo is a rural town and locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Degilbo had a population of 174 people. History The name ''Degilbo'' was the name of a pastoral run owned by William Henry Walsh (a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council) in 1847. It is believed to be an Aboriginal word ''dackeel bo'' meaning ''sharp or upright stones''. A very popular story is that ''Degilbo'' is actually the word ''obliged'' spelt backwards, attributed to a railway surveyor, who had to assign names to many railway stations, had run out of ideas but as he was ''obliged'' to come up with a name, he wrote that word down backwards. Boompa, Queensland
Boompa is a rural locality in the Fraser Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Boompa had a population of 83 people. History Teebar East Provisional School opened on 29 May 1893. In 1904 the school was moved and renamed Teebar West Provisional School. On 1 Jan 1909 it became Teebar West State School. In 1930 the school was moved again and was renamed Boompa State School in March 1933. The school closed on 28 January 1963. In 1922, the residents of the Woocoo Shire erected a war memorial outside St Mary's Church of England on the Maryborough-Biggenden Road at Teebar (now within Boompa).
