Big Horn County, Wyoming
Big Horn County is a county in the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 11,521. The county seat is Basin. Its north boundary abuts the south boundary of Montana. History Big Horn County was created by the legislature of Wyoming Territory in March 1890, and was organized in 1897; its area was annexed from Fremont, Johnson, and Sheridan counties. Big Horn County was named for the Big Horn Mountains which form its eastern boundary. Originally, the county included the entire Big Horn Basin, but in 1909 Park County, WY was created from a portion of Big Horn County, and in 1911 Hot Springs and Washakie counties were created from portions of Big Horn, leaving the county with its present borders. Emblem (also Germania or Liberty Bench) is an unincorporated community in western Big Horn County, Wyoming, United States. The community has an official population of 10, although the surrounding rural area increases the number to over 100. It lies along the concurrent U.S. Routes 14, 16 and 20, west-northwest of the town of Basin, the county seat of Big Horn County. Its elevation is . Although Emblem is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 82422. History Emblem was founded in 1896 when Solon Wiley's Big Horn Basin Development Company brought irrigation to the Emblem Bench. Lutheran Germans settled there. Shell is a census-designated place (CDP) in Big Horn County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 83 at the 2010 Census. The community is named for the abundance of fossil shells located in the area. Nearby exposed formations such as the Cloverly Formation and the Morrison Formation have yielded numerous fossils of dinosaurs and other animals. Located to the west of the town is the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite, a rare collection of dinosaur tracks from the Jurassic period. Shell is home to the Iowa State University geology field station.
