Big Brother Mouse
Big Brother Mouse ( lo, ອ້າຍໜູນ້ອຍ / ອ້າຽໜູນ້ອຽ, translit=ʼāi nū nǭi) is a not-for-profit publishing project in Laos. Big Brother Mouse publishes books that improve literacy and quality of life; and on making those books accessible, particularly in rural Lao villages. Books are scarce in Laos. Many people have never read anything except old textbooks and government pamphlets. The project uses the slogan, "Books that make literacy fun!" Its first books, published in 2006, were easy picture books designed to have a strong appeal for children. Books That Make Literacy Fun
A book is a medium for recording information in the form of writing or images, typically composed of many pages (made of papyrus, parchment, vellum, or paper) bound together and protected by a cover. The technical term for this physical arrangement is ''codex'' (plural, ''codices''). In 2005, the literacy rate in Laos was estimated to be 73% (83% male and 63% female). The Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI) finds that Laos is fulfilling only 74.0% of what it should be fulfilling for the right to education based on the country's level of income. HRMI breaks down the right to education by looking at the rights to both primary education and secondary education. While taking into consideration Laos' income level, the nation is achieving 84.0% of what should be possible based on its resources (income) for primary education but only 64.0% for secondary education.
