Bible Belt (Netherlands)
The Bible Belt ( nl, bijbelgordel, biblebelt ) is a strip of land in the Netherlands with the highest concentration of conservative orthodox Calvinist Protestants in the country. Although the term is recent (named after the Bible Belt of the United States) the Dutch Bible belt has existed for many generations. This Bible Belt stretches from Zeeland in the southwest, through the West-Betuwe and Veluwe in the center of the country, to parts of the province Overijssel in the northeast. Municipalities in this area include Yerseke, Tholen, Ouddorp, Opheusden, Kesteren, Barneveld, Nunspeet, Elspeet and Staphorst. The three biggest cities regarded to be part of the Bible Belt are Ede, Veenendaal and Kampen. In Overijssel, the Bible belt is more dispersed and not always contiguous from one municipality to the next. Pockets exist such as in Rijssen. Elspeet
Elspeet is a tourist village in the Netherlands, in the Veluwe region, in the municipality of Nunspeet, Gelderland, Netherlands. The village is situated about 10 kilometers south of Nunspeet and about 4 kilometers north of Uddel, on the Northern Veluwe. It is surrounded by forest and heather. The village has 4,635 inhabitants. The origin of the name Elspeet isn't entirely clear. ''El'' is thought to be referring to the word ''old'' and ''speet'' (spaded)i .e. to its older reclamation: ground first spaded over, as distinct from Nunspeet where this came later. Elspeet is a conservative Protestant village. In the 2006 municipal elections, 70 percent of the local population voted for the Reformed Political Party (SGP). The three Christian parties in the elections (the Reformed Political Party, the Christian Union and the Christian Democratic Appeal) had a combined total of almost 90 percent of the votes. North Brabant
North Brabant ( nl, Noord-Brabant ; Brabantian: ; ), also unofficially called Brabant, is a province in the south of the Netherlands. It borders the provinces of South Holland and Gelderland to the north, Limburg to the east, Zeeland to the west, and the Flemish provinces of Antwerp and Limburg to the south. Polder
A polder () is a low-lying tract of land that forms an artificial hydrological entity, enclosed by embankments known as dikes. The three types of polder are: # Land reclaimed from a body of water, such as a lake or the seabed # Flood plains separated from the sea or river by a dike # Marshes separated from the surrounding water by a dike and subsequently drained; these are also known as ''koogs'', especially in Germany The ground level in drained marshes subsides over time. Noordoostpolder
Noordoostpolder (; en, "North-East Polder") is a polder and municipality in the Flevoland province in the central Netherlands. Formerly, it was also called '' Urker Land''. Emmeloord is the administrative center, located in the heart of the Noordoostpolder. For history, see Zuiderzee Works. Dantumadiel
Dantumadiel () is a municipality in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. Dantumadiel is a rural municipality characterized by economic activity and agriculture. History The first time Dantumadiel is mentioned was in a document from 1242. At that time Dantumadiel, or ''Donthmadeil'' as it was then known, was a part of the Winninghe district, the northern part of Oostergo. Rijssen
Rijssen (; nds-nl, Riesn, ) is a city in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is part of Rijssen-Holten, one of thirteen municipalities in Twente. It has almost 28,000 inhabitants. The economy of Rijssen relies mostly on commerce and construction and transport companies. History Archeological evidence shows that the monk Lebuinus founded a church in Rijssen, as early as the seventh century, as part of a coordinated attempt to convert the local pagan Saxons to Christianity, though other archaeological finds, such as urns and grave mounds suggest habitation dating back as far as 5,000 years. Kampen, Overijssel
Kampen () is a city and municipality in the province of Overijssel, Netherlands. A member of the former Hanseatic League, it is located at the lower reaches of the river IJssel. The municipality of Kampen had a population of in and covers an area of . Kampen is located in the North West of Overijssel and is the largest city in this region. The city of Kampen itself has around 37,000 inhabitants. Kampen has one of the best preserved old town centres of the Netherlands, including remains of the ancient city wall (of which three gates are still standing) and numerous churches.
