Bianca Falcidieno
Bianca Falcidieno is an Italian applied mathematician whose research interests include computer graphics, geometric modeling, shape analysis, and mesh generation; she has been called a pioneer of semantics-driven shape representation. She is retired as a research director for the Italian National Research Council (CNR), where she led the Shape Modeling Group of the Institute for Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies (IMATI). Education and career As a master's student, after earning a degree in mathematics in the 1970s, Falcidieno became interested in computer graphics and geometric modeling through a project to visualize mathematical functions for use in teaching mathematical analysis to engineering students. By 1981, she was a permanent researcher for CNR, and founded its first research center for computer graphics. __NOTOC__ Geometric modeling is a branch of applied mathematics and computational geometry that studies methods and algorithms for the mathematical description of shapes. The shapes studied in geometric modeling are mostly two- or three- dimensional, although many of its tools and principles can be applied to sets of any finite dimension. Today most geometric modeling is done with computers and for computer-based applications. Two-dimensional models are important in computer typography and technical drawing. Three-dimensional models are central to computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), and widely used in many applied technical fields such as civil and mechanical engineering, architecture, geology and medical image processing. Shape Analysis (digital Geometry)
This article describes shape analysis to analyze and process geometric shapes. Description ''Shape analysis'' is the (mostly) automatic analysis of geometric shapes, for example using a computer to detect similarly shaped objects in a database or parts that fit together. For a computer to automatically analyze and process geometric shapes, the objects have to be represented in a digital form. Most commonly a boundary representation is used to describe the object with its boundary (usually the outer shell, see also 3D model). However, other volume based representations (e.g. constructive solid geometry) or point based representations (point clouds) can be used to represent shape. Once the objects are given, either by modeling (computer-aided design), by scanning (3D scanner) or by extracting shape from 2D or 3D images, they have to be simplified before a comparison can be achieved. Mesh Generation
Mesh generation is the practice of creating a mesh, a subdivision of a continuous geometric space into discrete geometric and topological cells. Often these cells form a simplicial complex. Usually the cells partition the geometric input domain. Mesh cells are used as discrete local approximations of the larger domain. Meshes are created by computer algorithms, often with human guidance through a GUI , depending on the complexity of the domain and the type of mesh desired. A typical goal is to create a mesh that accurately captures the input domain geometry, with high-quality (well-shaped) cells, and without so many cells as to make subsequent calculations intractable. The mesh should also be fine (have small elements) in areas that are important for the subsequent calculations. Shape Modeling International
Shape Modeling International (SMI), also known as ''International Conference on Shape Modeling and Applications'' is an annual symposium whose goal is to promote the dissemination of new mathematical theories and novel computational techniques for modeling, simulating, and processing digital shape representations. Initiated in 1997 by Tosyiasu L. Kunii and Bianca Falcidieno, the symposium became an annual event in 2001 after its merge with the Eurographics / ACM SIGGRAPH Workshop on Implicit Surfaces.
