The Marquess of Lede ( es, Marquesado de Lede) was a Flemish title in use during the Ancien Régime. Lede is a city in Flanders, Belgium. History Jacques, son of Adrian Bette, Lord of Angrelles inherited the Heerlijkheid of Lede, of his father in law Jean de Gruutere (1501 - 1556). By Spanish Royal decree the Heerlijkheid was elevated to a barony. And finally the title ''Marquess of Lede'' was created on 3 August 1633 by King Felipe IV for Guillaume de Bette, 1st Marquess of Lede after his participation in the Capture of Maastricht. The title was passed from generation to generation until the last Marquess died, the only relative was Maximilien Carnin de Staden, who died in Mesen Castle. Guillaume de Bette, 1st Marquess of Lede (c.1600– 23 June 1658), Baron of Péronne, Lord of Impe, Knight of Santiago, was a military commander and diplomat from the Spanish Netherlands. Life Bette was born at Lede around the beginning of the 17th century, the son of John de Bette, Lord of Lede and Joanna, lady of Bergen. He married Anna Marie de Hornes-Bassignies , daughter of Gerald de Hornes, 1st Count of Bassignies (1560-1612), Royal Chamberlain and Governor of Mechelen. They had five children and he was succeeded as Marquess of Lede by Ambrosius his eldest son. His cousin Françoise de Bette was the 26th abbess of Forest Abbey. Entering upon a military career, he became colonel of an infantry regiment in the Army of Flanders, and acted as military governor of Maastricht during the 1632 siege. Jean François de Bette, 3rd Marquess of Lede (6 December 1672 – Madrid, 11 January 1725) was a Belgian military commander in Spanish service. He was also lord of the Fiefdom of Lede in Flanders. Biography Born in Brussels, son of Ambroise de Bette, 2nd Marquess of Lede and Dorotea, lady of Croÿ. His grandfather was Guillaume de Bette, 1st Marquess of Lede. He served the Spanish Crown for most of his life, including as Commander-General of Aragon and Majorca. On 31 March 1703, he became a Knight of the Golden Fleece. He is best known for his part in the War of the Quadruple Alliance, when he commanded the Spanish troops who tried to conquer Sardinia and Sicily back from the Austrians in 1718–1719. He was victorious in the Battle of Milazzo (1718) and Battle of Francavilla (1719). Françoise De Bette
Françoise Bette (1593–1666) was, from 1637 to 1666, the 26th abbess of Forest Abbey. She was born in Lede, in the county of Flanders, the daughter of Adrian Bette, knight, and Agnes de Merode de Rummen. Her cousin, Guillaume de Bette, 1st Marquess of Lede, was a knight of the Order of Santiago with links to the Habsburg court. As abbess she faced financial strains, which she attempted to meet by selling off part of the abbey's land. She also attempted to reform the monastery, which had acquired a reputation for loose discipline. She was not notably successful in either effort. In 1644 she commissioned a precious reliquary in Baroque style to house the relics of Saint Alena. This was probably paid for by her family. The Bette are a Bantu people inhabiting the Obudu area of Cross River State, Nigeria. The Bette people are one of five tribes inhabiting Obudu area of Cross River State, along with the Utugwang, Alege, Ukpe and Ubang. The name "Bette" refers to both the language and the people who constitute a dominant ethnic group in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Bette migrated from the Bantu in south Central Africa and settled at the foot of the Cameroun Mountain, a part of which now constitutes the famous Obudu Cattle Ranch. Bette is a folk language that is still grossly unwritten because of the dearth of a standard orthography. Most scholars of Linguistics who have researched on some Nigerian folk languages have held ignominious opinion that folk languages reveal a low, primitive level of dynamic and imaginative thinking of the people. ''Bette'' is a self-titled studio album by American singer Bette Midler. It was released by Warner Bros. Records on October 10, 2000 in the United States to coincide with the premiere of her her self-titled CBS sitcom. Midler covered songs on this album written by artists like Elvis Costello and Kirsty MacColl, mixed with cover versions of classic soul and R&B songs from the 1970s, including " Shining Star", " Love T.K.O." and "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)". Upon release, the album only reached number 69 on US ''Billboard'' 200, and Warner Bros. subsequently dropped Midler from its roster in 2001 because of declining record sales. A maxi-single with several remixes of "In These Shoes" was released to promote the album. It reached number eight on the US ''Billboard'' Dance Music/Club Play Singles and number 14 on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales charts. ''Bette'' is an American sitcom television series which premiered on October 11, 2000, on the CBS network. The show was the debut of Bette Midler in a lead TV series role. Sixteen episodes were aired on CBS, with its final telecast on March 7, 2001. Eighteen episodes in total were produced, with the final two only broadcast on HDTV simulcasting and in foreign markets. ''Bette'' was created by Jeffrey Lane, with Midler serving as one of the executive producers. Synopsis The sitcom had Midler playing herself – a "divine celebrity" who is adored by her fans. To apply some ambiguity, neither Bette's last name nor that of her on-screen family's was used, to create the offset that there was some difference between the star's real-life and TV persona.
