Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Arthur Bethell (6 December 1879 - 15 December 1950) was a distinguished soldier in India in Edwardian times, and a successful author in the 1930s. He is chiefly significant as an author, providing a direct, unheroic and unvarnished narrative of British efforts to administer the Northern jungles of Assam during the early 20th century, often providing an alternative view to the official accounts. Nicholas William Bethell, 4th Baron Bethell (19 July 1938 – 8 September 2007) was a British politician. He was a historian of Central and Eastern Europe. He was also a translator and human rights activist. He sat in the House of Lords as a Conservative from 1967 to 1999. He served as an appointed member of the European Assembly from 1975 to 1979, and as an elected Member of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1994, and from 1999 to 2003. John Henry Bethell, 1st Baron Bethell (23 September 1861 – 27 May 1945), known as Sir John Bethell, 1st Baronet, from 1911 to 1922, was a British banker and Liberal politician. Early life Bethell was the son of George Bethell and his wife Frances (''née'' Tipper), and was educated at King's College London. His younger brother was Sir Thomas Bethell (1867–1957). Career He was a Director of Barclays Bank and of the Royal Exchange Assurance Corporation and also served twice as Mayor of East Ham and twice of West Ham. In November 1902, Bethell was adopted as the Liberal party candidate for Romford, and he was elected to the House of Commons from that constituency in the following election in 1906. Baron Bethell, of Romford in the County of Essex, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in the 1922 Dissolution Honours for the banker and Liberal politician Sir John Bethell, 1st Baronet, who had previously represented Romford and East Ham North in Parliament. He had already been created a Baronet, of Romford in the County of Essex, on 26 June 1911. The title descended from father to son until the early death of the third Baron, in 1967. The late Baron was succeeded by his first cousin, the fourth Baron. He was the son of William Gladstone Bethell, third son of the first Baron. James Nicholas Bethell, 5th Baron Bethell (born 1 October 1967), is a British hereditary peer and Conservative politician in the House of Lords. Early life Bethell was educated at the independent, fee-paying Harrow School before going on to study for a Scottish Master of Arts (an undergraduate degree) at the University of Edinburgh. Bethell worked as a journalist, and then managed the Ministry of Sound nightclub, before founding Westbourne Communications which he sold to Cicero Group after succeeding to his family titles. He unsuccessfully contested election to the House of Commons for the Tooting constituency in the 2005 general election, losing to Labour candidate and future Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. Marie Bethell Beauclerc (10 October 1845 – 19 September 1897) was a pioneer in the teaching of Pitman's shorthand and typing in Birmingham, England. In 1888 she was the first woman to be appointed as a teacher in an English boys' public school, at Rugby School. ''The Phonetic Journal'', September 1891 and the journal, ''Birmingham Faces And Places'', September 1892, both credit her with being the first female reporter in England. Te Henga, or Bethells Beach, is a coastal community in West Auckland, New Zealand. Richard Bethell, 1st Baron Westbury, (30 June 1800 – 20 July 1873) was a British lawyer, judge and Liberal politician. He served as Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain between 1861 and 1865. He was knighted in 1852 and raised to the peerage in 1861. Background and education Born at Bradford on Avon, in Wiltshire, he was the eldest son of the physician Richard Bethell of Bristol and Jane (''née'' Baverstock). Tony Bethell
Richard Anthony Bethell (9 April 1922 – 17 February 2004) was born in Dar-es-Salaam in the British territory of Tanganyika. He joined the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. After his Mustang was shot down he was taken prisoner and held in the German prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III at Sagan where he actively participated in the Great Escape, being one of the 76 officers to break out and make some distance across enemy occupied territory before being recaptured. His name was not one of the 50 who were picked to be executed and he, with 25 others, went back into captivity. He retired from the RAF in 1955 and worked in financial services in Canada.
