Bessborough Armoury
Bessborough Armoury is a Canadian Forces armoury located at 2025 West 11th Avenue in Vancouver, British Columbia. History Construction of the armoury began in September 1932 and was completed in the following spring. Architecture The architect was Richard T. Perry, who was also the Commanding Officer of the 15th Brigade. The outside of the building was done in an Art Deco style. Once the building was completed it initially provided accommodations for 15th Brigade and the British Columbia Hussars. The building was officially opened on 27 March 1934 by the Earl of Bessborough, the Governor-General of Canada. The building is listed on the Vancouver Inventory of heritage buildings as a "B" Category and is classed as a "Registered" building by the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office. An arsenal is a place where arms and ammunition are made, maintained and repaired, stored, or issued, in any combination, whether privately or publicly owned. The regiment was created in 1920 as one of the recommendations of the Otter Committee. In the Second World War it manned the coastal defence artillery guns that protected the Port of Vancouver. After the war the regiment reverted to field artillery. While the regiment has never deployed overseas, several of its members have individually participated in Canadian Forces missions overseas. This unit is not the same 15th Field Artillery Regiment (4th Canadian Armoured Division) that served in the Second World War. The British Columbia Hussars was a light cavalry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia (now the Canadian Army). In 1939, the regiment was converted from light armour to artillery. Vere Brabazon Ponsonby, 9th Earl of Bessborough, (27 October 1880 – 10 March 1956), was an Anglo-Irish businessman and politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the fourteenth since Canadian Confederation. Born and educated in England into ' the Ascendancy', the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, he graduated with a law degree from Cambridge University. In 1910 he became a member of the London County Council as a member of the British House of Commons. Upon the death of his grandfather ten years later, Ponsonby succeeded as Earl of Bessborough and took his seat in the House of Lords. In 1931 he was appointed as Governor-General by King George V, on the recommendation of British prime minister Ramsay MacDonald, to replace The Earl of Willingdon as viceroy. The Royal Canadian Air Cadets (french: Cadets de l'Aviation royale du Canada) is a Canadian national youth program for young individuals aged 12 to 18.
