Bertel Thorvaldsens Plads
Bertel Thorvaldsens Plads (English: Bertel Thorvaldsen's Square) is a public square located in front of Thorvaldsens Museum on Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen, Denmark. The two other sides of the triangular space are defined by the rear of Christiansborg Riding Grounds and Vindebrovej, the street along the Slotsholmen Canal which separates Slotsholmen from Gammel Strand. History When Thorvaldsens Museum was first built in 1848, its architect, Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, also sketched a project for a square in front of it. Inspired by the at that time newly built Alte Museum which he had seen on his visit to Berlin in 1824, he proposed a round stone basin filled with water in front of the museum. Another inspiration was the antique basins he had seen in Rome, which were used as fountains in the city. Parks And Open Spaces In Copenhagen
Copenhagen is a green city well endowed with open spaces. It has an extensive and well-distributed system of parks that act as venues for a wide array of events and urban life. As a supplement to the regular parks, there are a number of congenial public gardens and some cemeteries doubling as parks. It is official municipal policy in Copenhagen that all citizens by 2015 must be able to reach a park or beach on foot in less than 15 minutes. Parks King's Garden the garden of Rosenborg Castle, is the oldest and most visited park in Copenhagen. Its landscaping was commenced by Christian IV in 1606. Every year it sees more than 2.5 million visitors, and in the summer months it is packed with sunbathers, picknickers and ballplayers. It also serves as a sculpture garden with a permanent display of sculptures as well as temporary exhibits during summer. Jørn Larsen
Jørn Larsen (15 December 1926 – 13 June 2004) was a Danish painter and sculptor. He was a member of ''Grønningen'' from 1970 and received the Eckersberg Medal in 1978 and the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1989. He represented Denmark at the Venice Biennale in 1993. Biography Jørn Larsen was born in Næstved in 1926. He first apprenticed as a house painter in his home town but in 1948 moved to Copenhagen where he attended drawing classes. He was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1951 but left after completing just one semester to go to Italy. Over the next couple of years he travelled abundantly in Europe, spending his time mainly in France, Spain, Greece and Turkey. In 1955 he made his first non-figurative pictures and had his debut with them at the Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling (autumn exhibition) in Copenhagen. Bertel Thorvaldsen
Bertel Thorvaldsen (; 19 November 1770 – 24 March 1844) was a Danes, Danish and Icelanders, Icelandic Sculpture, sculptor medallist, medalist of international fame, who spent most of his life (1797–1838) in Italy. Thorvaldsen was born in Copenhagen into a working-class Danish/Icelandic family, and was accepted to the Royal Danish Academy of Art at the age of eleven. Working part-time with his father, who was a wood carver, Thorvaldsen won many honors and medals at the academy. He was awarded a stipend to travel to Rome and continue his education. In Rome, Thorvaldsen made a name for himself as a sculptor. Maintaining a large workshop in the city, he worked in a heroic neo-classicist style. His patrons resided all over Europe. Upon his return to Denmark in 1838, Thorvaldsen was received as a Folk hero, national hero. The Thorvaldsen Museum was erected to house his works next to Christiansborg Palace. Alte Museum
Alte is a village and civil parish in the municipality of Loulé, in the Algarve region in the south of Portugal. The population in 2011 was 1,997, in an area of 94.33 km².
