Bert Turner (politician)
John Albert "Bert" Turner (26 March 1888 – 5 April 1973) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Turner was born in Brisbane, Queensland, the son of William Riggen Turner and his wife Lucy (née Brinkley). He was educated at Milton State School and after finishing his education joined the fire brigade in 1906. Electoral District Of Kelvin Grove
The electoral district of Kelvin Grove was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. It was first created in a redistribution ahead of the 1923 state election, and existed until the 1960 state election. Kelvin Grove replaced part of the former Electoral district of Enoggera. Kelvin Grove was abolished in 1960, replaced mainly by the Electoral district of Ashgrove. Members for Kelvin Grove :Tooth went on to represent Ashgrove from May 1960 to December 1974. 1957 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 3 August 1957 to elect the 75 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The major parties contesting the election were the Queensland Labor Party led by Premier Vince Gair, the Labor Party led by former Deputy Premier Jack Duggan, and the Country-Liberal coalition led by Frank Nicklin. The elections, only 15 months into the parliamentary term, were made necessary by the collapse of the nine-term Labor government. Gair had formed the Queensland Labor Party after being expelled from the Labor Party, and attempted to stay in power as a minority government. However, a request for supply was denied on 12 June, forcing the election. The Country-Liberal Coalition won a decisive victory, taking 42 seats against only 31 for the two Labor factions combined. Liberal Party Of Australia (Queensland Division)
The Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), branded as Liberal Queensland, was the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia until 2008. It was initially formed in October 1943 as the Queensland People's Party (QPP), which then absorbed the disbanded Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in 1944. In 1945, the QPP had an agreement with the newly formed Liberal Party, where in the "federal sphere", QPP would be the Queensland division of the Liberal Party and would run its candidates under the Liberal Party banner in federal elections. However, in the "state sphere", it would continue to exist individually under its own banner. In July 1949, the QPP was renamed to reflect its status as the Queensland division of the Liberal Party. Milton State School
Milton State School is a heritage-listed state school at Bayswater Street, Milton, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1923 to 1936 by Queensland Department of Public Works. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 April 2017. History Milton State School opened in 1889, as Rosalie State School, on its current site approximately two kilometres west of the Brisbane CBD. The school is important in demonstrating the evolution of state education and its associated architecture. In 2017 Milton State School retains a Depression-era brick school building, retaining walls and stairs (1935–37); a re-purposed two-storey timber classroom building (1923); and mature trees. George Morris (Australian Politician)
George Alfred Morris (15 July 1892 – 18 May 1967) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was the only member of the Protestant Labor Party to hold a seat in the Queensland Parliament. Biography Morris was born in Sydney, New South Wales, the son of William Boyd Morris and his wife Emily Jane (née Finney). He was educated at Glebe Public School, Sydney and after leaving school he enlisted with the Royal Australian Navy and was stationed at the Haslar Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, England, and from 1915-1918 was on HMAS Australia as a sick-berth attendant. He left the navy in 1923 was in show business from 1928 to 1938. He rejoined the navy when World War II broke out, being based at the Flinders Naval Hospital & Balmoral Depot, Rushcutters Bay, and at Leeuwin in Western Australia.
