Berrigan Football Club
The Berrigan Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Saints, is an Australian rules football and netball club playing in the Picola & District Football League. The club is based in the small town of Berrigan located in the Riverina district of New South Wales. History The Berrigan Football Club's first recorded match was against Cobram, at Cobram in 1891 and initially competed in the Murray Border Football Association in 1895 and 1896, then competed in the Southern Riverina Football Association (SRFA) from 1905 to 1930. Berrigan won ten SRFA premierships against teams such as Finley, Leniston, Tocumwal and Jerilderie. In 1931 and 1932, Berrigan, Finley and Nathalia applied to join the Murray Football League, but were knocked back on the grounds of excessive travel for the other competing club. Berrigan and Finley remained in the SRFA in 1931, but in 1932, Jerilderie went into recess and Oaklands and Urana pulled out of the SRFA, which saw this competition ultimately fold up. T ... The Picola & District Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball league affiliated with the AFL Victoria Country. The league covers a large area of northern Victoria, Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales from Shepparton, Victoria, Shepparton in the south to Jerilderie, New South Wales, Jerilderie in the north and consists of teams from the smaller communities and towns. Picola & District Football Netball League Clubs
Picola is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, from the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Picola had a population of 334. Picola Post Office opened on 24 August 1878 and closed in late 2010. The Australia Post outlet was then taken over by the Picola Hotel, until early 2011. The hotel remains a community postal agent. The Picola Hotel offers a variety of services, from meals and functions, weekly raffles, and is now the local milk bar, community postal agent and V/Line ticket agency. The railway to Picola opened in 1896, and until the line closed in 1986, the town was a railhead for loading of wheat and livestock from the local area, and timber from the nearby Barmah National Park. Tim Hargreaves
Tim Hargreaves (born 30 May 1975) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn and Geelong in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. A forward, Hargreaves came from the New South Wales town of Berrigan and kicked four goals on his AFL debut, against West Coast at Subiaco. He kicked a further six in his next three games, including another four goal haul against Brisbane, which were complemented by 21 disposals. In 1995 he won the Mirrool silo kicking competition, made famous by Billy Brownless. At the end of the 1996 AFL season he was traded to Geelong in a straight swap for Aaron Lord. He played a semi final at his new club in 1997 but from an individual point of view struggled to make an impact. Fred Way
Fred Way (born 9 February 1944) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A knock ruckman, Way played six games in his debut season in 1964 and played with Berrigan in 1965, then played 18 games with South Melbourne in 1966. Way returned to play with Berrigan in 1967 and 1968 and won the 1968 Murray Football League’s O’Dwyer Medal and played in Berrigan's 1968 premiership team. Way was lured back to South Melbourne to play under Norm Smith and had a successful season in 1969 when he finished second in his club's best and fairest. Brian Gleeson (footballer)
Brian Gleeson (born 3 November 1934) is a former Australian rules footballer in the VFL. Gleeson attended St Patrick's College, Ballarat and later played with St Kilda at Centre half-forward initially. He developed into a skilful and agile ruckman, winning the Brownlow medal in 1957. In the Melbourne evening paper The Herald, 29 August 1957 Gleeson said: ''"We are just like a family at St Kilda," he said. "We depend on teamwork and we bring each other into the game. Coach Alan Killigrew is responsible for that and the officials and supporters have given us encouragement and confidence."''
