Bernie O'Connor (Galway Hurler)
Benjamin O’Connor (born 1949), known as Bernie O'Connor, is an Irish former hurler and manager. As a player he lined out with Meelin, before later serving as a coach and manager, most notably with Newtownshandrum. Playing career O'Connor first played for his club, Meelin, in the Duhallow division in 1962, winning an U14 hurling championship. He followed this U16 and minor hurling medals in 1964 and 1966 respectively. He also played Gaelic football at juvenile level at the time, before later winning league and championship medals in that code with Rockchapel and Knockskevane. In 1963, O'Connor was drafted onto the Duhallow divisional senior team and made his debut in the Cork SHC as a 14-year-old a year later. After several years of near misses for Meelin, O'Connor won the first of a record-equalling four successive Duhallow JHC titles with his club in 1970. Meelin
Meelin () is a village in northern County Cork, barony of Duhallow, Ireland. The village is near the border with County Limerick and County Kerry. Meelin is within the Cork North-West (Dáil constituency). At above sea level, Meelin is the highest village in Ireland, although Glencullen in County Dublin also claims to be the highest at about . History Fulacht fiadhs are found in Meelin and around the Duhallow area. There is also a 4,000-year-old burial mound in the village. In the early 20th century quarries were set up in the village and employed over 100 people. But in the 1920s quarrying started to slow down and by 1964 it had stopped altogether. In 1963, English geologist William Morton carried out a survey of the limestone area around the village and assumed there might be oil deep in the rocks. All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship
The GAA Hurling Under-20 All-Ireland Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling Under-20 All-Ireland Championship) is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition for male players between the ages of 17 and 20 in Ireland. The championship was contested as the All-Ireland Under-21 Championship between 1964 and 2018 before changing to an under-20 age category from 2019. Kerry Senior Hurling Team
The Kerry county hurling team represents Kerry in hurling and is governed by Kerry GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the Joe McDonagh Cup and the National Hurling League. Kerry's home ground is Austin Stack Park, Tralee. The team's manager is Stephen Molumphy. The team last won the Munster Senior Championship in 1891, the All-Ireland Senior Championship in 1891 and has never won the National League. Cork Under-21 Hurling Championship
Cork Premier Under-21 A Hurling Championship (currently known for sponsorship reasons as the ''Evening Echo'' Cork County Premier Under-21 A Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1973 for the top tier under-21 hurling teams in the county of Cork in Ireland. The series of games are played from the summer to the winter months with the county final currently being played at Páirc Uí Rinn. The prize for the winning team is the Dick Barrett Cup. The championship uses a double elimination format whereby each team is guaranteed at least two games. 22 clubs currently participate in the Premier Under-21 Championship. The Cork Intermediate A Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Co-Op Superstores Cork Intermediate A Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Cork IAHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the second tier intermediate clubs in the county of Cork in Ireland. It is the fourth tier overall in the entire Cork hurling championship system. The Cork Intermediate Championship was introduced in 1909 as a competition that would bridge the gap between the senior grade and the junior grade. Duhallow Junior A Football Championship
The Duhallow Junior A Football Championship is the top footballing competition in the Duhallow division in Cork. It was first run after the formation of the Duhallow division in 1933. The Championship includes a group stage, therefore every team has at least 2 matches. The winners and runner up of this competition go on to compete in the Cork Junior A Football Championship. Cullen are the title-holders after defeating Kanturk by 4-16 to 1-02 in the 2022 championship final played in Boherbue. Format Group stage The 6 teams are divided into two groups of three. The Double (Gaelic Games)
The Double is a term in Gaelic games that refers to a county winning the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in the same year. Other major trophies won in combination in the same year at minor or under-21 levels are also often referred to as doubles. Similarly, the winning of the All-Ireland and the National League titles in the same year may also be referred to as the Double, albeit an inferior one. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Laois) or Laois GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Laois.
