Bernard V-4
The Bernard H.V.120 was a racing seaplane designed and built by the French aircraft manufacturer Bernard. It was developed specifically to compete in the Schneider Trophy race. The company developed it as a wooden single-seat mid-wing cantilever monoplane, equipped with twin floats and powered by a Hispano Suiza 18R W-18 piston engine. Development was protracted, primarily as a result of engine-related difficulties, that delayed availability and thus did not permit the aircraft to race in the 1929 competition as intended. The first aircraft performed its maiden flight on 25 March 1930, four months after the race. The test flight programme, while successfully demonstrating the ability to fly at 500 kmph (310 mph), was not trouble-free. The second aircraft was lost in a fatal crash during 1931; work continued with the first aircraft. Air racing is a type of motorsport that involves airplanes or other types of aircraft that compete over a fixed course, with the winner either returning the shortest time, the one to complete it with the most points, or to come closest to a previously estimated time. __NOTOC__ The Bernard 20 was a 1920s French single-seat monoplane fighter aircraft designed and built by the Société des Avions Bernard. Originally displayed as a mock-up at the 1928 Paris Air Show it was a low-wing monoplane based on the Bernard V2 racer. The prototype powered by a Hispano-Suiza 12Jb inline piston engine first flew in July 1929 from Orly. With its racing inheritance, in 1930 the aircraft flew at a speed of 280 km/h (174 mph). With the lack of interest by the French authorities for monoplanes the project was abandoned after 18 months of test flying. In engineering, a longeron and stringer is the load-bearing component of a framework. The term is commonly used in connection with aircraft fuselages and automobile chassis. Longerons are used in conjunction with stringers to form structural frameworks. An aileron (French for "little wing" or "fin") is a hinged flight control surface usually forming part of the trailing edge of each wing of a fixed-wing aircraft.
