Bergen City Museum ( no, Bymuseet i Bergen) is a foundation which operates several museums in Bergen, Norway. History The museum foundation was established on 1 July 2005 through merger of the former independent institutions. The establishment of Bergen City Museum took place as part of a national museum reform. Each museum has joint administration and manages historic building reflecting various aspects of the city's history. Collectively Bergen City Museum presently manages more than 100 buildings and a unique collection of art and artifacts. Alvøen Manor
Alvøen or Alvøy is a manor house located on a historic industrial site in the Laksevåg borough of the city of Bergen in Vestland county, Norway. Alvøen Manor was once one of the grander private homes in Bergen. History Alvøen is the site one of Norway's oldest industrial communities and one of the best preserved industrial locations. In 1626, King Christian IV of Denmark granted the right to establish a gunpowder mill on the site. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1733, but rebuilt. Didrich Jansen Fasmer (1706-1770) improved it and built another gun mill in the 1760s. Towards the end of the 1700s, Alvøen became an industrial site with working houses attached to the factories. Later it started production of saltpeter, linseed oil and paper. Hendrik Jansen Fasmer (1766-1836) founded the paper mill during 1797. Bryggens Museum
Bryggens Museum is a museum located in Bergen, Norway. During 1955, parts of the historic district of Bryggen were ravaged by a fire. During subsequent archaeological excavations a number of objects were uncovered, providing an insight into commerce, shipping, handicrafts and everyday life during the Medieval Period. Many of these artifacts now form the basis of the modern museum and are permanently exhibited. Additionally, the museum also has changing exhibits. Bryggens Museum was established during 1976. The architect behind the design work was Øivind Maurseth, who also designed the nearby Radisson SAS Hotel. Archeologist Asbjørn Herteig was the first curator at the Bryggen Museum. Damsgård Manor
Damsgård Manor ( no, Damsgård hovedgård) is a landmark manor and estate in Bergen, Norway. It is noted for its distinct rococo style and is possibly the best preserved wooden building from 18th-century Europe. History The area surrounding the manor was most likely populated during the Viking era or earlier, but literary evidence shows it was a population center in 1427, listed as church property. Following the Reformation in 1536, the estate was taken over by the crown and then sold to foreign interests. The name is most likely derived from Dam Tønneson, who in 1654 inherited the farm from his father Tønnes Klausson, who in turn received it from Frederick II of Denmark due to his service during the Northern Seven Years' War. Located at the entrance of Bergen harbour, the castle is one of the oldest and best preserved stone fortifications in Norway. St George's Church, Bergen
St George's Church, Bergen ( no, Sankt Jørgen kirke) is a historic church of the Church of Norway in Bergen Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. This is also the site of the Leprosy Museum (). Although it is no longer regularly used, it is one of the churches in the Bergen domprosti parish which is part of the Bergen domprosti (arch-deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The green, wooden church was built in a cruciform design in 1706 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 125 people.
