Bergen (North Holland)
Bergen () is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Its North Sea beaches and forests make it a popular destination for tourists. In 2001, the municipality was formed from a merger of the former municipalities of Egmond, Schoorl, and the smaller community of Bergen proper that had existed since 1811. Since about 1900, Bergen has been the home of many painters, writers and architects. Some of the work of this "Bergen School" is on exhibit at Museum Kranenburgh. The neighbourhood of Park Meerwijk, constructed in 1915, is made up entirely of villas in Amsterdam School style. There are regular art fairs in Bergen, as well as an annual music festival (the Holland Music Sessions in August) and arts festival (the Kunsttiendaagse in October). As of 24 March 2022, there are 344 municipalities ( nl, gemeenten) and three special municipalities () in the Netherlands. The latter is the status of three of the six island territories that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Amsterdam School
The Amsterdam School (Dutch: ''Amsterdamse School'') is a style of architecture that arose from 1910 through about 1930 in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam School movement is part of international Expressionist architecture, sometimes linked to German Brick Expressionism. Hargen
Hargen is a hamlet in the municipality of Bergen], in the provinces of North Holland, the Netherlands. The hamlet was first mentioned between 822 and 825 as in Horgana, and means "sacred place". Hargen has no place signs, but there is a directional sign pointing to Hargen. It was home to 171 people in 1840. Groet
Groet is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Bergen, and lies about 11 km northwest of Alkmaar. History The village was first mentioned between 1130 and 1161 as "in Grothen", and means "land growth". Groet developed on the boundary of the dunes and the raised bog. The Dutch Reformed church is a single aisled church with wooden tower which was built in 1639 and was modified in 1738. In 1830, the choir collapsed and was rebuilt shortly after. The windmill Groetermolen is a ''polder'' mill was built in 1890. In 1977, a pumping station was built and the wind mill was decommissioned resulting in a deterioration of the wind mill, therefore, it was decided to drain the ''polder'' both by the mill and the pumping station. Egmond-Binnen
Egmond-Binnen () is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Bergen, and lies about southwest of Alkmaar. History The village was first mentioned in 922 as Ekmunde. The etymology is unknown. The missionary Adalbert of Egmond founded a chapel near Egmond-Binnen and died there around 740. In 922, the Benedictine Egmond Abbey was founded at the location and a settlement developed around it. The abbey was plundered and partially destroyed in 1573. The loot was used to finance the founding of Leiden University. In 1789, the south tower collapsed, and the remainder was sold for demolition. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1836 at the former north tower of the abbey. Between 1914 and 1956, the church was built and a tower was added. In 1933, a new monastery was built in Egmond-Binnen and elevated to abbey in 1950. Egmond-Binnen was home to 915 people in 1840. Egmond Aan Den Hoef
Egmond aan den Hoef () is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Bergen, and lies about west of Alkmaar. Until 2001, Egmond aan den Hoef was part of the municipality of Egmond. The village was first mentioned in 1167 Ekmunde, and means "parcel of land belonging to Egmond". The name originally applied only to the castle, but was later used for the settlement around the castle. In Egmond aan den Hoef are the remains of Egmond Castle, the residence of the House of Egmond. The castle was first built in the 11th century, and was destroyed around 1205. It was rebuilt and fortified, and was destroyed again in the 14th century. Again it was rebuilt. In 1573 at the order of William the Silent it was demolished by the Geuzen, led by Diederik Sonoy. The remnants were taken down at the end of the 18th century. Camperduin
Camperduin (Kamperduin) is a hamlet in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Bergen, and lies about 12 km northwest of Alkmaar. The hamlet was first mentioned between 918 and 948 Campthorpa. The current name means "dunes near the cultivated field". It has place name signs, however the camp sites have also placed Camperduin aan Zee (Camperduin on Sea) to indicate that it is a seaside resort, however the entire hamlet is near the sea. Camperduinen used to be a village. A church was built in 1689, but demolished in 1807. Alkmaar
Alkmaar () is a city and municipality in the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland, about 30 km north of Amsterdam. Alkmaar is well known for its traditional cheese market. For tourists, it is a popular cultural destination. The municipality has a population of 109,896 as of 2021. History The earliest mention of the name Alkmaar is in a 10th-century document. As the village grew into a town, it was granted city rights in 1254.
