Bent Holtsmark
Bent Holtsmark (1823–1903) was a Norwegian agriculturalist and politician. He was born in Lier, but moved to Asker in 1849. He was a farmer at Tveter farm, and also owned the farms Berg, Vøien and Sem. He was decorated with the ''King Oscar II Medal'' for his work in agriculture, and was also mayor of Asker from 1869 to 1875. He was an elector for the Conservative Party in the 1888 Norwegian parliamentary election. His sons Bernt Holtsmark and Wilhelm Holtsmark established an agricultural college at Sem, today known as a manor which lent its name to the Declaration of Sem of the Bondevik's Second Cabinet. Bernt Holtsmark was also a Minister of Agriculture. A third son Torger Holtsmark moved back to Lier, and became mayor there. Lier, Norway
Lier is a municipality in Viken county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Lierbyen. The municipality of Lier was established on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The area Åssiden was transferred from Lier to the neighboring municipality of Drammen on 1 July 1951. Norway's longest indoor shopping center, Liertoppen, is located in Lierskogen. The newspaper ''Lierposten'' is published in Lier. General information Name The Old Norse form of the name was ''Líðir''. The name is the plural form of ''líð'' which means "hillside". Coat of arms The coat of arms and was designed by Hallvard Trætteberg and granted on 14 August 1970. The arms show five silver-colored apple blossoms on a red background. Gabriel Gabrielsen Holtsmark
Gabriel Gabrielsen Holtsmark (1 February 1867 – 20 July 1954) was a Norwegian educator, physicist and actuary. Personal life He was born in Asker as a son of farmer and mayor Bent Holtsmark and his wife Anne Elisabeth Gabrielsen. He was a brother of Bernt, Torger and Wilhelm Holtsmark. Both Bernt and Torger were members of the Parliament of Norway. In April 1893 in Kristiania he married Margrete Weisse, and through her he was a son-in-law of professor Johan Peter Weisse. He had two sons and three daughters; Johan Peter Holtsmark and Anne Holtsmark became professors and Karen Holtsmark became a notable painter. A third daughter Marie eventually took over the family farm Holtsmark in Lier, as former owner Torger Holtsmark had no children. Karen Holtsmark
Karen Kristine Holtsmark (11 November 1907 – 7 March 1998) was a Norwegian painter. Biography Holtsmark was born at Ås in Akershus, Norway. She was a daughter of Gabriel Gabrielsen Holtsmark (1867–1954) and his wife Margrete Weisse (1871–1933). Her father was a physicist, and her mother was an educator. She was a maternal granddaughter of philologist Johan Peter Weisse, and a paternal granddaughter of agriculturalist and politician Bent Holtsmark. She was a niece of politicians Bernt and Torger Holtsmark, and a sister of professors Johan and Anne Holtsmark. She married Haakon R. Brækken in July 1936, but the marriage was dissolved. Career Holtsmark attended the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry from 1924 to 1927 and the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts from 1927 to 1930. Anne Holtsmark
Anne Elisabeth Holtsmark (21 June 1896 – 19 May 1974) was a Norwegian philologist. Personal life She was born in Kristiania, the second of five children of Gabriel Gabrielsen Holtsmark (1867–1954) and Margrete Weisse (1871–1933), and grew up in Kristiania and Ås. She was a maternal granddaughter of Johan Peter Weisse, a paternal granddaughter of Bent Holtsmark, a niece of Bernt and Torger Holtsmark, and a sister of Johan and Karen Holtsmark. She herself never married. Career Holtsmark was educated in business schools and worked at the Christiania Sparebank from 1913 to 1915 before taking the examen artium at Kristiania Cathedral School in 1917. Johan Peter Holtsmark
Johan Peter Holtsmark (13 February 1894 – 10 December 1975) was a Norwegian physicist, who studied spectral line broadening and electron scattering. In 1929, while at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, Holtsmark established acoustics research laboratories, focusing on architectural acoustics and sound insulation. Holtsmark was also a consultant for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) throughout the 1930s. Together with the Swedish physicist Hilding Faxén published Holtsmark a work in 1927 about scattering of electrons in gases. Here they introduced a new, mathematical method based upon partial waves. This is now standard and described in almost every modern book on quantum mechanics. Between 1934 and 1937 he led the construction of a Van de Graaff accelerator at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, which became the first particle accelerator to go into operation in Scandinavia. Torger Holtsmark
Torger Holtsmark (30 October 1863 – 1926) was a Norwegian farmer and politician for the Conservative Party. He was born at Tveter farm in Asker as a son of Bent Holtsmark and his wife Anne Elisabeth Gabrielsen. He was a brother of Bernt and Wilhelm Holtsmark. Through his brother Gabriel, he was an uncle of professors Johan Peter Holtsmark and Anne Elisabeth Holtsmark, and painter Karen Holtsmark. After graduating from the Higher College of Agriculture at Aas in 1886, he moved to his father's native Lier in 1889, taking over the farm Holtsmark at Sylling. Asker ( no, Asker), properly called Askerbygda in Norwegian, is a district and former Municipalities of Norway, municipality in Akershus, Norway.
