Benito Legarda
Benito Cosme Legarda y Tuason (September 27, 1853 – August 27, 1915) was a Filipino legislator who was a member of the Philippine Commission of the American colonial Insular Government, the government's legislature, and later a Resident Commissioner from the Philippine Islands to the United States Congress. Early life and education He was born in Manila, Philippines on September 27, 1853 to a Spanish-Filipino mestizo family. He attended the Jesuits' College and the University of Santo Tomas of Manila. Political life He started his political life as a member of President Emilio Aguinaldo's cabinet at Malolos and vice president of the Filipino Congress. Legarda Street is a short street located in Sampaloc district in Manila, Philippines. It crosses through the eastern section of the University Belt area in a generally east–west orientation between the Nagtahan Interchange and the intersection with Nepomuceno Street in Quiapo. The Legarda Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Sampaloc in the City of Manila. Built in 1922, the school is notable for its main school building that has managed to retain its pre-war architecture, making its building the oldest surviving campus in Manila. History The school was built on the land that was donated by the heirs of Benito Legarda, an eminent legislator and cabinet member of the First Philippine Republic who later became the first Resident Commissioner of the Philippines during the American colonial period.
