Beni Khedache
Beni Khedache ( ar, بني خداش ') is a town and commune in Médenine Governorate, Tunisia. It had a population of 3,071 as of 2004. It lies between Jebel Dahar and the Grand Erg Oriental, roughly west of Médenine. It is home to a subterranean mosque. Tunisia is divided into 24 governorate, governorates (''wilayat'', sing. ''wilayah''). This term in Arabic can also be translated as province or federated state (though the latter does not apply, as Tunisia is a unitary state). Médenine Governorate
Medenine ( ') is one of the 24 governorates (provinces) of Tunisia. Geography The governorate encompasses the south-easternmost coastal strip, totalling 9167 km2 and had a population of 479,520 at the 2014 census. The capital is Medenine. The governorate includes the country's largest island, Djerba, which is connected by a ferry boat and has over a third of the total population of the governate and its own airport. The area is generally lowlands. It extends in two projections at its extreme ends a maximum of 60 km from the coast, otherwise the neighbouring division of Tataouine is 30 km from the coast. Jebel Dahar
Jebel Dahar (french: Djebel Dahar) is a low sandstone mountain chain of the Médenine Governorate of Tunisia. Geography The chain is oriented on a north-south axis, bisecting the south of Tunisia. At the northern end, it meets the east-west-oriented Jebel Tebaga. The Sahara lies to the south and west of it, and the fertile Jeffara plain to the east. It runs for over south from Matmata, curving gently to the east to sink beneath the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental near Tataouine. Foothills extend for a further to the border with Libya, beyond which the chain continues as the Nafusa Mountains. The peaks of Jebel Dahar are lower than those of the Dorsale and Atlas chains. Grand Erg Oriental
The Grand Erg Oriental (English: 'Great Eastern Sand Sea') is a large ''erg'' or "field of sand dunes" in the Sahara Desert. Situated for the most part in Saharan lowlands of northeast Algeria, the Grand Erg Oriental covers an area some 600 km wide by 200 km north to south. The erg's northeastern edge spills over into neighbouring Tunisia. Natural phenomena The Grand Erg Oriental is a desert, a natural region receiving very little rainfall. It is the largest ''Erg'' in Algeria, the next in size being the much smaller Grand Erg Occidental ('Western Sand Sea'). Medenine ( ar, مدنين ) is the major town in south-eastern Tunisia, south of the port of Gabès and the Island of Djerba, on the main route to Libya. It is the capital of Medenine Governorate. Overview In pre-colonial times, Medenine was already the most important trading centre in the south, attracting merchants from all over North Africa and even from Bornu, to the south of the Sahara. The Ksar housed the central granaries of the various nomadic Berber tribes of the region. Boubaker El Akhzouri (born 1 November 1948 in Béni Khedache) is a Tunisian theologian and politician. He was appointed Minister of Religious Affairs in the Ghannouchi government on 10 November 2004.
