Ben Target
Ben Target is a UK based alternative comedian who won the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year in 2011. Target is renowned for his absurdist approach to comedy and has been gaining a cult following on the UK circuit since 2010. His shows are well known for being, surreal, absurd and different, often utilising storytelling and props to punctuate his narratives. In 2011 he found success as joint winner of the Leicester Mercury Comedy award alongside Tom Rosenthal. The following year he was nominated for the Fosters Comedy Award newcomer. Target is a regular performer at some of the most prestigious alternative comedy clubs in the UK, including ACMS, Weirdos and the Invisible Dot. In 2012 Target featured on BBC Three's Comedy at the Fringe. Alternative Comedy
Alternative comedy is a term coined in the 1980s for a style of comedy that makes a conscious break with the mainstream comedic style of an era. The phrase has had different connotations in different contexts: in the UK, it was used to describe content that was an "alternative" to the mainstream of live comedy, which often involved racist and sexist material. In other contexts, it is the nature of the form that is "alternative", avoiding reliance on a standardised structure of a sequence of jokes with punch lines. Patton Oswalt has defined it as "comedy where the audience has no pre-set expectations about the crowd, and vice versa. In comedy clubs, there tends to be a certain vibe—alternative comedy explores different types of material." In an interview with ''The A.V. The Alternative Comedy Memorial Society
The Alternative Comedy Memorial Society (ACMS) is a British comedy night, where comedians are invited to perform sets that might not work at more mainstream comedy nights. It was founded by John-Luke Roberts and Thom Tuck at the New Red Lion Theatre in Islington, London. For a while it was mainly held at the Soho Theatre, but now the regular London venue is The Phoenix, Cavendish Square. Each year there are Alternative Comedy Memorial Society shows at the Edinburgh Fringe. ACMS has been running since March 2011, usually on Monday evenings. The group's logo is a boulder emblazoned with 'JOKE?' being pushed up a hill, representing the slogan 'Fresh Sysiphean Comedy'. BBC Three
BBC Three is a British free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by the BBC. It was first launched on 9 February 2003 with programmes targeting 16 to 34-year-olds, covering all genres including animation, comedy, current affairs, and drama series. Weirdos Comedy Club
Weirdos Comedy Club is a UK based group of alternative comedians founded by Adam Larter in 2010. Origins Weirdos Comedy Club, commonly referred to as "Weirdos", was formed by Adam Larter as an experimental night and a safe place to try out riskier or more alternative material than usual circuit comedy. Nights generally focussed on anarchic and silly sets deemed too alternative for more streamlined stand-up common on the UK comedy circuit. They have been compared to the 80's alternative comedy group The Comic Strip. Originally housed in the Lion, Kings Cross it grew from a comedy night into a group and over the years nights and projects became larger. Edinburgh Comedy Awards
The Dave (TV channel), Dave's Edinburgh Comedy Awards (formerly the Perrier Comedy Awards, and also briefly known by other names for sponsorship reasons) are presented to the comedy shows deemed to have been the best at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland.
