Ben Jealous
Benjamin Todd Jealous (born January 18, 1973) is an American civil rights leader and social impact investor. He served as the president and chief executive officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 2008 to 2013. When he was selected to head the NAACP at age 35, he became the organization's youngest-ever national leader. ''The Washington Post'' in 2013 described him as "one of the nation's most prominent civil rights leaders." Jealous ran for Governor of Maryland in the 2018 Maryland gubernatorial election, 2018 election. He ran as a Democratic Party (United States), Democrat, and won the party's nomination in the June 2018 primary, defeating Prince George's County, Maryland, Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker and seven other candidates. NAACP
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a civil rights organization in the United States, formed in 1909 as an interracial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans by a group including W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, Moorfield Storey and Ida B. Wells. Leaders of the organization included Thurgood Marshall and Roy Wilkins. Its mission in the 21st century is "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination". National NAACP initiatives include political lobbying, publicity efforts and litigation strategies developed by its legal team. Rushern Baker
Rushern Leslie Baker III (born October 24, 1958) is an American lawyer and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he was elected county executive of Prince George's County, Maryland in 2010 and won re-election in 2014. In 2018 and 2022, he mounted an unsuccessful primary campaign to become Governor of Maryland. Early life and education Baker was born in Valdosta, Georgia, and grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. Baker's father, a Green Beret who served in the Vietnam War, mother, and 3 siblings lived on an Army base in Okinawa, Japan for a time before settling in Massachusetts. York School (California)
York School is a coeducational day school consisting of about 225 students on a hilltop near Highway 68 in Monterey, California. History York was founded in 1959 with 12 seventh-grade boys and two teachers. For the first year, only seventh-grade boys were admitted, but it was planned that a grade would be added each year as the class advanced until a full high school was in session. Later, the seventh grade was dropped. It was decided that the Episcopal school would be called York after the Diocese of York in England, one of the oldest in existence. The coat of arms of the See of York was adopted as the school's slogan and is still in use today. York started in Pacific Grove, but was soon moved to Monterey. Ashburton is a wealthy, predominantly African-American neighborhood in the Forest Park region of northwestern Baltimore City, Maryland. It is located near Liberty Heights Avenue and Hilton Street, and is characterized by a few large Victorian mansions interspersed among row houses.
