Ben Ford (politician)
Benjamin Thomas Ford (born 1 April 1925) is a British former Labour politician who was the Member of Parliament for Bradford North from 1964 to 1983. Early years Born to parents Benjamin Charles Ford and May Ethel (''née'' Moorton), Ford's address at the time of his birth was 67 Haberdasher Street, Shoreditch, County of London. He moved to Streatham, SW16 in 1927. Ford attended Rowan Road Central School in Surrey. From 1951 to 1964, he worked as an electronic fitter-wireman. Political career Ford was councillor on Clacton Urban District Council from 1959 to 1962, and an alderman of Essex County Council from 1959 to 1965. Ford was election agent for Harwich in 1959, and president of that Constituency Labour Party from 1955 to 1963. He was elected Labour Party Member of Parliament for Bradford North at the 1964 general election. The Manifesto Group
The Manifesto Group was a British parliamentary alliance of Labour MPs led by Dickson Mabon (who preferred to be known as Dick Mabon), who were opposed to what they perceived to be the leftward drift of the Labour Party in the 1970s. History In 1974, the left-wing Labour MP Ian Mikardo was elected as chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party. Dickson Mabon was opposed to this, as he saw it as evidence of a drift towards the left. Leeds () is a city and the administrative centre of the City of Leeds district in West Yorkshire, England. It is built around the River Aire and is in the eastern foothills of the Pennines. It is also the third-largest settlement (by population) in England, after London and Birmingham. The city was a small manorial borough in the 13th century and a market town in the 16th century. Bramhope is a village and civil parish in the City of Leeds metropolitan borough, West Yorkshire, England, north of Holt Park and north east of Cookridge. The village is north of Leeds city centre and it is in the LS16 Leeds postcode area. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 3,400. The Worshipful Company of Gunmakers is one of the 110 Livery Companies of the City of London. The Gunmakers' Company received a Royal charter of incorporation in 1637. The Proof House has statutory duties to regulate the safety of firearms in the United Kingdom. To administer Proof, the Company was given broad powers of 'search, gage, proof, trial and mark'. The power to search (with a constable) for unproved guns and seize them is still vested in the Company today. The Freedom of the City of London started around 1237 as the status of a 'free man' or 'citizen', protected by the charter of the City of London and not under the jurisdiction of a feudal lord. In the Middle Ages, this developed into a freedom or right to trade, becoming closely linked to the medieval guilds, the livery companies. In 1835 eligibility for the freedom of the City was extended to anyone who lived in, worked in or had a strong connection to the City.
