Ben Flores
Benson Flores, sometimes called Ben Flores (c. 1848 – April 11, 1929), was one of the early Filipino Canadians to settle in Bowen Island, B.C. He is the first known Filipino to immigrant to Canada on record. The exact location of Benson Flores' birth is not known although it is believed he was from the Philippines together with other fishermen who ferried locals around the area and fished to make a living in Snug Cove. According to the Bowen Island Museum and Archives, Flores operated the first boat rental in Snug Cove. He was referred to as "Old Ben." Flores suffered from bladder and kidney disease. At age 81, he died on April 11, 1929, in Vancouver General Hospital. Bowen Island
Bowen Island (originally Nex̱wlélex̱m in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh), British Columbia, is an island municipality that is part of Metro Vancouver. Bowen Island is within the jurisdiction of the Islands Trust. Located in Howe Sound, it is approximately wide by long, with the island at its closest point about west of the mainland. There is regular ferry service from Horseshoe Bay provided by BC Ferries, as well as semi-regular water taxi services. Snug Cove
Snug Cove is a community on the east coast of Bowen Island, British Columbia, opposite Horseshoe Bay. The island is wide by long and west of the mainland, and has a population of around 3,700 people. The Squamish hunters and fishermen were the first people to stay in the area using the site of the present community as a temporary camp. The Squamish name for this area was Xwilil Xhwm, which has been translated as "fast drumming ground" a name which has been connected to the Squamish story of how the black-tailed deer were created on the island. Early European settlers arriving in Snug Cove discovered ''shake dwellings'' and a smoke house. Snug Cove is noted for its marina and its buildings from the early 1900s, some of which (like the old post office and a group of cottages overlooking the marina) were built by the Union Steamship Company. Mountain View Cemetery (Vancouver)
Mountain View Cemetery is the only cemetery in the City of Vancouver, British Columbia. Opened in 1886, it is located west of Fraser Street between 31st and 43rd Avenues. It is owned and operated by the City of Vancouver and occupies of land, containing more than 92,000 grave sites and over 145,000 interred remains. The first interment took place on February 26, 1887. The first interment was supposed to happen in January 1887 but poor weather, a new road, and a broken wagon wheel resulted in the intended first occupant being temporarily buried outside the cemetery.
