Ben Africa
Ben Africa (born 13 October 1938) is a Namibian politician, medical doctor, and former Baster captain. Africa is most notable for serving as the fourth Captain of the Baster and his tenure as vice-president of the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance. Life and death Ben Africa was born in Rehoboth, South West Africa (present-day Namibia). He was educated at Athlone High School in Cape Town, South Africa. He studied medicine at the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1964. Africa narrowly avoided expulsion after publicly confronting on-campus racial discrimination. He became the first Resident District Surgeon of Rehoboth in 1966. In 1971, alongside John McNab and Piet Junius, Africa established the Rehoboth Baster Association (RBA). The RBA was founded in opposition to the Rehoboth Volksparty to negotiate with the South West Africa government, to counterract the gastroenteritis epidemic in the "Baster Gebied". Rehoboth, Namibia
Rehoboth is a town in central Namibia just north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Located 90 kilometres (55 miles) south of the Namibian capital Windhoek, Rehoboth lies on a high elevation plateau with several natural hot-water springs. It receives sparse mean annual rainfall of , although in the 2010/2011 rainy season a record were measured. In 2005, it had a population of 21,378 later increased to 28,843 in 2011, according to the 2011 Namibian Population and Housing Census. South West Africa
South West Africa ( af, Suidwes-Afrika; german: Südwestafrika; nl, Zuidwest-Afrika) was a territory under South African administration from 1915 to 1990, after which it became modern-day Namibia. Baster
The Basters (also known as Baasters, Rehobothers or Rehoboth Basters) are a Southern African ethnic group descended from white European men and black African women, usually of Khoisan origin, but occasionally also enslaved women from the Cape, who resided in the Dutch Cape Colony in the 18th century. Since the second half of the 19th century, the Rehoboth Baster community has been concentrated in central Namibia, in and around the town of Rehoboth. Basters are closely related to Afrikaners, Cape Coloured and Griqua peoples of South Africa, with whom they share a language and culture. Captains Of The Rehoboth Baster
The Captains of the Rehoboth Baster (Afrikaans: ''Kapteins van die Rehoboth Baster'') were the traditional leaders of the indigenous Baster community in central Namibia, until the dissolution of the Rehoboth Homeland in 1990, upon Namibian independence. The 1990 Constitution of Namibia does not give the same special rights to the Rehoboth Baster as the other traditional leaderships of Namibia. The Baster Council, and the Rehoboth population, still elect a Captain today, but this has no autonomy or powers associated with it, like the other traditional leaderships under the Namibian constitution. Popular Democratic Movement
The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), formerly the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA), is an amalgamation of political parties in Namibia, registered as one singular party for representation purposes. In coalition with the United Democratic Front, it formed the official opposition in Parliament until the parliamentary elections in 2009. John McNab
John McNab (1934/1935 - 3 October 2020) was a Namibian politician who served as Rehoboth, Namibia, Rehoboth Baster captain from 1999 until 2020. Life and death John McNab was born around the Rehoboth, Namibia, Rehoboth area of South West Africa in 1934 or 1935. His grandfather was of Scottish descent, and was murdered in Waterberg Plateau Park, Waterberg in 1880. In 1971, McNab co-founded the Rehoboth Baster Association (RBA), alongside Ben Africa and Piet Junius. McNab remained with the RBA before leaving in 1977 to establish the Rehoboth Democratic Movement. Petrus "Piet" Matheus Junius (1941 - 3 April 2021) was a Namibian politician who served as the Deputy Education Minister of the Interim Namibian Government from 1985 to 1989. Junius also served as vice-president of the Democratic Turnhalle Association between 1985 and 1989. Life and death Junius was born in Rehoboth, South West Africa in 1941. Gastroenteritis, also known as infectious diarrhea and gastro, is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract including the stomach and intestine.
