Belén Maya
Belén Maya (born 1966) is a Spanish flamenco dancer, choreographer and educator. She is the daughter of Mario Maya, a Romani man considered one of the most innovative flamenco dancers in Spanish history and Carmen Mora, also a flamenco dancer. She was born in New York City while her parents were on tour performing. Maya began dancing while still young and studied classical, Hindu and contemporary dance in Italy, Germany and England. She also studied at the Amor de Dios school in Madrid with teachers including Paco Fernández, Goyo Montero, Carmen Cortés, Paco Romero and Rosa Naranjo. She joined the Spanish National Ballet, later joining her father's company. She then formed her own company, going on tour in Japan; she next joined the Andalusian Dance Company. In 1995 she was chosen to be the head of "Flamenco", a documentary by Carlos Saura. The director chose Belén Maya as one of the representatives of the new aesthetics of flamenco. Flamenco Dance
Flamenco (), in its strictest sense, is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia, and also having historical presence in Extremadura and Murcia. In a wider sense, it is a portmanteau term used to refer to a variety of both contemporary and traditional musical styles typical of southern Spain. Flamenco is closely associated to the gitanos of the Romani ethnicity who have contributed significantly to its origination and professionalization. However, its style is uniquely Andalusian and flamenco artists have historically included Spaniards of both gitano and non-gitano heritage. The oldest record of flamenco music dates to 1774 in the book ''Las Cartas Marruecas'' by José Cadalso. Mario Maya
Mario Maya (1937 – September 27, 2008) was one of Spain's most innovative and influential flamenco dancers. He was born in Córdoba in 1937 to a Romani family, but grew up in the Sacromonte of Granada. He set up his own school in Seville in 1983 and, ten years later, presented his new company ‘Flamenco Mario Maya’ at the Alcalá Palace Theatre in Madrid. Between 1994 and 1997 he directed the Andalusian Dance Company at the Andalusian Dance Centre. He took part in Carlos Saura’s Flamenco (film 1995). Some of his most important works include ''Ceremonial'' (1974), ''Camelamos Naquerar'' (1976), ''¡Ay Jondo!'' (1977), ''El Amargo'' (1986), ''El Amor Brujo'' (1987) and ''Réquiem'' (1994). Maya died of cancer in Seville on September 27, 2008. Goyo Montero
Goyo Montero Morell (born 1975 in Spain, Madrid) is a Spanish ballet dancer, a ballet director and a choreographer. Born in 1975 in Madrid, Spain. He was formed by Carmen Roche and completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory for Professional Dance in Madrid and the School of the National Ballet of Cuba. Among others he received the following awards as a dancer: Winner of the Prix de Lausanne in 1994 and gold medal and Grand Prix at the International Ballet Competition of Luxembourg. Critics of Dance Europe Magazine nominated him Best Dancer of the season 2003/2004. Goyo Montero was Principal Dancer at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (from 1999 to 2004) and Soloist at the Oper Leipzig, Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the Royal Ballet of Flanders. Carlos Saura
Carlos Saura Atarés (born 4 January 1932) is a Spanish film director, photographer and writer. Along with Luis Buñuel and Pedro Almodóvar, he is considered to be one of Spain’s most renowned filmmakers. He has a long and prolific career that spans over half a century. His films have won many international awards. Saura began his career in 1955 making documentary shorts. He quickly gained international prominence when his first feature-length film premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 1960. Mayte Martín
Mayte Martín (born in Barcelona, Spain, April 19, 1965) is a Flamenco cantaora (singer), bolero singer, and composer. She is widely recognized as one of the most important flamenco voices of her generation. She has also devoted part of her career to other genres such as Spanish American music, especially bolero. Biography Martín started singing as a small child, and, at the age of 10, she won an amateur singing contest organized by a supermarket. After this, she started performing regularly as an amateur at the peñas flamencas in Barcelona and its outskirts, and became a professional at the age of 16.
