Bellona, Campania
Bellona is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Caserta in the Italy, Italian region Campania, located about north of Naples and about northwest of Caserta. Bellona borders the following municipalities: Camigliano, Capua, Pontelatone, Vitulazio. History The town takes its name from the ancient Rome, Roman goddess Bellona (goddess), Bellona, who had a temple devoted to her in the area. Recent excavations also have shown the likely presence of another temple of Mercury (mythology), Mercury. When the Saracens destroyed the ancient Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Capua in 841, some of their inhabitants moved to the Palmobara hill (the modern Bellon's ''frazione'' of Triflisco) founding the town of Sicopoli. This was also destroyed by the Saracens in 856. Bellona continued to be a ''frazione'' of Capua until the Napoleonic Wars, Napoleonic Age (1806). On 7 October 1943 German soldiers shot 54 of Bellona's citizens. Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro awarded the town the G ...

Bellona (goddess)
Bellona () was an ancient Roman goddess of war. Her main attribute is the military helmet worn on her head; she often holds a sword, spear, or shield, and brandishes a torch or whip as she rides into battle in a four-horse chariot. She had many temples throughout the Roman Empire. She is known for her temple outside of Rome being the official decision making centre in regards to war and for her bloodlust and madness in battle. Her iconography was extended by painters and sculptors following the Renaissance. Etymology The name of the goddess of war ''Bellōna'' stems from an earlier ''Duellona'', itself a derivative of Old Latin ''duellum'' ('war, warfare'), which likewise turned into ''bellum'' in Classical Latin. The etymology of ''duellum'' remains obscure. Linguist Georges-Jean Pinault has proposed a derivation from ''*duenelo-'' ('quite good, quite brave'), a reconstructed diminutive of the word ''duenos'', attested on an eponymous inscription as an early Old Latin ant ...

Dhalgren
''Dhalgren'' is a 1975 science fiction novel by American writer Samuel R. Delany. It features an extended trip to and through Bellona, a fictional city in the American Midwest cut off from the rest of the world by an unknown catastrophe. Plot overview The city of Bellona is severely damaged; radio, television, and telephone signals do not reach it. People enter and leave by crossing a bridge on foot. Inexplicable events punctuate the novel: One night the perpetual cloud cover parts to reveal two moons in the sky. One day a red sun swollen to hundreds of times its normal size rises to terrify the populace, then retreats across the sky to set on the same horizon. Street signs and landmarks shift constantly, while time appears to contract and dilate. Buildings burn for days, but are never consumed, while others burn and later show no signs of damage. Gangs roam the nighttime streets, their members hidden within holographic projections of gigantic insects or mythological creatures. ...

Bellona Reef
The Chesterfield Islands (''îles Chesterfield'' in French) are a French archipelago of New Caledonia located in the Coral Sea, northwest of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia. The archipelago is 120 km long and 70 km broad, made up of 11 uninhabited islets and many reefs. The land area of the islands is less than 10 km2. During periods of lowered sea level during the Pleistocene ice ages, an island of considerable size (Greater Chesterfield Island) occupied the location of the archipelago. Bellona Reef, 164 km south-southeast of Chesterfield, is geologically separated from the Chesterfield archipelago but commonly included.
