Belarus–Czech Republic Relations
Belarus and the Czech Republic established diplomatic relations in 1993. Belarus has an embassy in Prague. The Czech Republic has an embassy in Minsk. Both countries are full members of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. In October 2020, Czech Republic and other countries recalled their ambassadors from Belarus following disputed presidential elections. In May 2021, Czech Republic suspended flights between the two countries after Belarus' air hijacking. The country also set up an office in Prague for the Belarusian opposition. Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhánek stated, "The Belarusian opposition has and will have the unequivocal support of the Czech Republic." 2020 Belarusian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Belarus on Sunday, 9 August 2020. Early voting began on 4 August and ran until 8 August. Incumbent Alexander Lukashenko was announced by the Central Election Commission (CEC) to have won a sixth term in office, crediting him with just over 80% of the vote. Lukashenko has won every presidential election since 1994, with all but the first being labelled by international monitors as neither free nor fair. Opposition candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya claimed to have won a decisive first-round victory with at least 60% of the vote, and called on Lukashenko to start negotiations. Ryanair Flight 4978 was a regularly scheduled international passenger flight from Athens International Airport, Greece, to Vilnius Airport, Lithuania, operated by the Polish subsidiary Buzz. On 23 May 2021, while in Belarusian airspace, it was diverted by the Belarusian government to Minsk National Airport, where two of its passengers, opposition activist and journalist Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, were arrested by authorities.
