Beirut (musician)
Beirut is an American band that was originally the solo musical project of Zach Condon. Beirut's music combines elements of indie rock and world music. The band's first performance with the full brass section was in New York, in May 2006, in support of their debut album ''Gulag Orkestar'', but performed their first show with Condon, Petree, and Collins at the College of Santa Fe earlier that year. Condon named the band after Lebanon's capital, because of the city's history of conflict and as a place where cultures collide. Beirut performed in Lebanon for the first time in 2014, at the Byblos International Festival. History Early years Zach Condon was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on February 13, 1986. The Wiltern
The Pellissier Building and adjoining Wiltern Theatre is a 12-story, Art Deco landmark at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue in Los Angeles, California. The entire complex is commonly referred to as the Wiltern Center. Sharon Katharine Van Etten (born February 26, 1981) is an American singer-songwriter. She has released six studio albums, the latest of which is '' We've Been Going About This All Wrong'' (2022). Early life Van Etten was born in Belleville, New Jersey, the middle child of five. She lived in Nutley, New Jersey, then moved to Clinton, New Jersey as a pre-teen. Total Slacker
Total Slacker is an American band from Brooklyn, New York. In their first year as a group, they released two singles on independent record labels both in the U.S. and Europe and played over 100 shows in New York, garnering the attention of press and international radio play. \ Total Slacker's first drummer was Ross Condon, the younger brother to Zach Condon of the band, Beirut. In January 2011, their single "Crystal Necklace" reached #36 on Pitchfork's Top 50 songs from 2010 readers poll. Gulag Orkestar
''Gulag Orkestar'' is the debut album of Beirut. It was recorded in 2005 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Gulag was a Soviet government agency administering criminal justice, while ''orkestar'' is the Croatian word for "orchestra". It is written in the booklet that the front and back photos were found in a library in Leipzig, torn out of a book. The original photographer was unknown to the creators of the album while it was recorded, but has since been discovered to be Sergey Chilikov. Reception The album has received great critical acclaim and was later re-released to include the ''Lon Gisland'' EP. As of 2009, sales in the United States have exceeded 79,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". Kelly Pratt (musician)
Kelly Pratt is an arranger and multi-instrumentalist best known for his horn work in the band Beirut and with David Byrne. Biography Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Pratt has been a member of Beirut since the band's relocation to Brooklyn, playing in the live band and on the recordings. He joined Montreal's Arcade Fire on their Neon Bible world tour in 2007–2008, playing trumpet, flugelhorn, euphonium, French horn and flute. Pratt has also been an arranger and musical director for David Byrne & St. Vincent, leading the brass section for the tour promoting their album Love This Giant. He is currently arranger and conductor for Father John Misty.
