Beer In Slovenia
Beer in Slovenia is dominated by the pale lager market. The most commonly known brands of Slovenian beer, now united under the same parent company, are Laško and Union, although a number of smaller breweries exist. History There were several minor breweries in Slovenia before the 19th century. The first lager brewery, the Laško Brewery, was established in 1825 in Laško. Beers Today, two major beers dominate the market and both breweries are currently owned by Laško Brewery (Pivovarna Laško) after buying Union brewery with the Interbrew. Both breweries offer a variety of beers, but the most popular are plain lagers, Union beer and Laško/Zlatorog beer. The main beer is lager, drunk in over 95% of the cases. Koper (; it, Capodistria, hr, Kopar) is the fifth largest city in Slovenia. Located in the Istrian region in the southwestern part of the country, approximately five kilometres () south of the border with Italy and 20 kilometres () from Trieste, Koper is the largest coastal city in the country. Pale Lager
Pale lager is a very pale-to-golden-colored lager beer with a well- attenuated body and a varying degree of noble hop bitterness. The brewing process for this beer developed in the mid-19th century, when Gabriel Sedlmayr took pale ale brewing and malt making techniques back to the Spaten Brewery in Germany and applied them to existing lagering methods, resulting in a less dark, red-colored beer. This technique was applied by Josef Groll, the famous Bavarian brewmaster, hired by Měšťanský pivovar in the city of Pilsen, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary (now Czech Republic) with local ingredients, resulting in the first pale lager Pilsner Urquell in 1842. Laško Brewery
Laško Brewery ( sl, Pivovarna Laško) is the largest brewery in Slovenia. It is located in Laško and named after the town. The brewery was founded in 1825 by Franz Geyer, a gingerbread baker and mead producer. After World War II ended in 1945, Laško was the fifth-largest in Yugoslavia, and by 1991 it was the largest among 28 Yugoslav breweries. It lost much of the Yugoslav market in 1991 after Slovenia declared independence and during the resulting Ten-Day War, although sales rebounded during the 1990s. Union Brewery (Slovenia)
Union Brewery ( sl, Pivovarna Union) is one of the largest breweries in Slovenia. It was formed in 1864 in Ljubljana and became part of Heineken International in 2015. Since 1987 it also includes a museum of beer. History The first record of beer brewing in Ljubljana is from 1592. The brewery was founded in 1864 as a small family business by Ivan and Peter Kosler as Kosler brewery. The actual birth of the Union brand dates back to 1909 when Kosler brothers, due to the increase in sales and the great market potential of the then Austro-Hungarian empire, founded the Pivovarna Union joint venture with the contribution of Credit and Trade Institute in Vienna. Laško
Laško (; german: Tüffer) is a spa town in eastern Slovenia. It is the seat of the Municipality of Laško. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. The municipality is now included in the Savinja Statistical Region. The town is located at the foothills of Hum Hill on the Savinja River. It was first mentioned in written documents dating to 1227 and was granted town privileges in 1927. It is known to have been settled since the Iron Age and Roman archaeological finds are common in the area, though the precise location of the Roman settlement is not known. Today the town is best known for its annual Festival of Beer & Flowers (''Pivo - Cvetje'') and the local Laško Brewery, the largest brewery in the country. Lager
Lager () is beer which has been brewed and conditioned at low temperature. Lagers can be pale, amber, or dark. Pale lager is the most widely consumed and commercially available style of beer. The term "lager" comes from the German for "storage", as the beer was stored before drinking, traditionally in the same cool caves in which it was fermented. As well as maturation in cold storage, most lagers are distinguished by the use of ''Saccharomyces pastorianus'', a "bottom-fermenting" yeast that ferments at relatively cold temperatures. Ljubljana
