Beecroft's Toys
Beecroft's Toys is an English online and mail order toy shop. Although founded in 1822 in Nottingham, it is now based in Hampshire. The company sources toys from around the world. History Josiah Corbett founded the first toy and fancy goods shop at No. 2 High Street, Nottingham. The shop then moved to a larger premises on Chandler's Lane in 1844. In 1848 Corbett also hired a partner, Charles Beecroft, and in 1848 the toy store was renamed Beecroft's. In the 20th century, Charles's son John Henry became Beecroft's owner, followed by Thomas and then his son John Hooton Beecroft. The shop moved frequently around the city during these periods, first to the Elizabethan House at 9 High Street, then to "Beecroft’s Corner" at the Exchange Building on Market Square. Goose Fair
The Nottingham Goose Fair is an annual travelling funfair held at the Forest Recreation Ground in Nottingham, England, during the first week of October. Largely provided by travelling Showmen, it is one of three established fairs in the United Kingdom to carry the name, the others being the smaller Goosey Fair in Tavistock, Devon, and the even smaller Michaelmas Goose Fayre in Colyford, East Devon. In recent years, there have been more than 400,000 visitors to Nottingham's fair annually. Now known for its fairground rides and attractions, Goose Fair started as a livestock and trade event, with a reputation for its excellent cheese. The name "Goose Fair" is derived from the thousands of geese that were driven from the Lincolnshire fens in the East of England to be sold in Nottingham at the fair each year. Cecil Roberts
Edric Cecil Mornington Roberts (18 May 1892 – 20 December 1976) was an English journalist, poet, dramatist and novelist. He was born and grew up in Nottingham. Working career Roberts published his first volume of poems, with a preface by John Masefield, in 1913. He published his first novel, ''Scissors,'' in 1923 and by the 1930's was an established bestselling author. His work was translated into 12 languages. He worked as a journalist on the '' Liverpool Post'' during the First World War, initially as literary editor, then as a war correspondent. For five years from 1920 he edited the daily '' Nottingham Journal''. In 1922 he stood for Parliament for the Liberal Party. In the 1930s he reviewed books for The Sphere. During the Second World War, Roberts worked for Lord Halifax, UK Ambassador to the United States. Young V&A, formerly the V&A Museum of Childhood, is a branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum (the "V&A"), which is the United Kingdom's national museum of applied arts. It is in Bethnal Green and is located on the Green itself in the East End of London and specialises in objects by and for children. History The museum was founded in 1872 as the Bethnal Green Museum. The iron structure reused a prefabricated building from Albertopolis which was replaced with some early sections of the modern V&A complex. Alton, Hampshire
Alton ( ) is a market town and civil parish in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England, near the source of the River Wey. It had a population of 17,816 at the 2011 census. Alton was recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086 as ''Aoltone''. During the Saxon period Alton was known as ''Aweltun''. The Battle of Alton occurred in the town during the English Civil War.
