Beda Chang
Beda Chang () (c. 1905 – November 11, 1951) was a Chinese Jesuit priest. He was martyred after being tortured during a wave of persecution by the communist government. Biography Born as Zhang Zhengming () to a Shanghai family which had been Catholic for many generations, he studied at St Ignatius College in Shanghai and completed his doctorate of letters in sinology at the University of Paris in 1937. He became dean of faculty of arts at Shanghai's Aurora University. Because he refused to renounce his faith and to cooperate with the government in their persecution of the Church, Chang was arrested, imprisoned, tortured, and then died. William Aedan McGrath, in the cell opposite Chang, reported that he saw the priest languishing and vomiting in the cell for two months before he died on the morning of November 11, 1951. Ignatius Kung Pin-Mei
Ignatius Kung Pin-Mei (; 2 August 1901 – 12 March 2000) was the Catholic Bishop of Shanghai, China, from 1950 until his death in 2000. He spent 30 years in Chinese prisons for defying attempts by China's Communist government to control Catholics in the country through the government-approved Catholic Patriotic Association. At the time of his death he was the oldest member of the College of Cardinals. Biography On September 8, 1955, Kung, along with several hundred priests and Church leaders, was arrested and imprisoned. He was sentenced five years later to life imprisonment for counter-revolutionary activities. Kung was secretly named a Cardinal ''in pectore'' in the consistory of 1979 by Pope John Paul II. The formula ''in pectore'' is used when a pope names a cardinal without announcing it publicly in order to protect the safety of the cardinal and his congregation. Requiem
A Requiem or Requiem Mass, also known as Mass for the dead ( la, Missa pro defunctis) or Mass of the dead ( la, Missa defunctorum), is a Mass of the Catholic Church offered for the repose of the soul or souls of one or more deceased persons, using a particular form of the Roman Missal. Aedan McGrath
Rev. Aedan McGrath, SSC, born William Aedan McGrath, was an Irish Columban missionary priest in China. McGrath was active with the Legion of Mary and became notable for his work in China as a missionary that eventually led to his imprisonment by the People's Republic of China. After leaving China, McGrath continued his work with the Legion of Mary and with missionary activity in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and the Philippines. Early life and priesthood McGrath was born in Drumcondra, Dublin on the 22 January 1906, to William a Barrister and Gertrude McGrath, both from County Down. He entered the Missionary Society of St. Columban (Maynooth Mission to China) and was ordained priest in 1929. In 1930, he was sent as a missionary to Tsigngiany in North China, to work on behalf of the Legion of Mary.
