Bear Creek Motel
The Bear Creek Motel is a historic motel on United States Route 65 in Bear Creek Springs, Arkansas. It is a single T-shaped stone and concrete building, built in 1936 to replace a wood-framed tourist accommodation that had burned down. The building has a distinctive wave-shaped concrete roof, intended to lure travelers off the road, and houses five guest rooms and an office. The wave shape is continued in the guest rooms, which have barrel-vaulted ceilings, and are also finished in concrete and stone veneer. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Bear Creek Springs is an unincorporated community in Boone County, Arkansas, United States. It is the location of (or is the nearest community to) Bear Creek Motel, which is located on U.S. 65 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Major highways * * * History In the nineteenth century or earlier, there was a Shawnee village called Shawneetown located along the banks of Bear Creek. The exact location was not known. Prior to having the name Bear Creek Springs, the area had a post office called Francis. It is unknown why that name was used. In the years before the Civil War, a community existed in the area due to clean water and a great deal of game. It also served as a stopping place for settlers to camp as they headed west. United States Route 65
U.S. Route 65 (US 65) is a north–south United States highway in the southern and midwestern United States. The southern terminus of the route is at U.S. Route 425 in Clayton, Louisiana. The northern terminus is at Interstate 35 just south of Interstate 90 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Parts of its modern route in Iowa and historic route in Minnesota follow the old Jefferson Highway. Route description Louisiana U.S. 65 begins in Clayton, Louisiana and proceeds northward to Waterproof, St. Joseph, and Newellton, all in Tensas Parish. At Newellton, it intersects with Louisiana State Highway 4 coming from the west. In Tallulah, it intersects Interstate 20, and approximately 30 miles north of this intersection it enters Arkansas.
