Beans, Texas
Beans (also known as Beans Place, Beans Community, Cross, and Horger) is an unincorporated community in Jasper County, Texas, United States. Beans is located on the west side of the Angelina River, northwest of Jasper. The community was founded in 1904 by Ira S. Bean, who initially named its post office Horger, in honor of John Miller Horger. In 1925, the Post Office Department established a new post office for Bean's Place to avoid confusion with the towns of Borger and Spurger; however, the Horger post office did not close until 1929. Beans had a population of 25 through 1944 and was marked on highway maps as Beans Community through the 1980s. The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) is a non-profit educational organization, dedicated to documenting the history of Texas. Angelina River
The Angelina River is formed by the junction of Barnhardt and Shawnee creeks northwest of Laneville in southwest central Rusk County, Texas. The river flows southeast for and forms the boundaries between Cherokee and Nacogdoches, Angelina and Nacogdoches, and Angelina and San Augustine counties. It passes under US 59 via former Angelina River Bridge. It empties into the Neches River north of Jasper in northwestern Jasper County. The Sam Rayburn Reservoir is on the southern part of the river. History The river was named for a native Hasinai girl whom Spanish missionaries called Angelina. It was well known to Spanish and French explorers and to missionaries in East Texas. Jasper, Texas
Jasper is a city in and the county seat of Jasper County, Texas, United States. Its population was 6,884 at the 2020 U.S. Census, down from 7,590 at the 2010 U.S. Census. Jasper is situated in the Deep East Texas subregion, about west of the Texas-Louisiana state line. Jasper (the "Butterfly Capital of Texas") holds an annual Butterfly Festival the first Saturday in October to celebrate the migration of the monarch butterflies. Borger ( ) is the largest city in Hutchinson County, Texas, United States. The population was 12,551 at the 2020 census. Borger is named for businessman Asa Philip "Ace" Borger, who also established the Hutchinson County seat of Stinnett and several other small towns in Texas and Oklahoma. Spurger ( ) is an unincorporated community in southeastern Tyler County, Texas, United States. The Spurger Independent School District serves area students. Historical development The first area settlers are known to be in the region as early as 1834. The town's name ''Spurger'' comes from a family of landowners who resided there initially. Recreational Road 255 (RE 255) is a Recreational Road located in Tyler, Jasper, and Newton counties, in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of Texas. The highway is approximately long, and travels through mainly rural areas in the northern portion of the three counties. RE 255 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 69 (US 69), in Tyler County, near the city of Colmesneil. The route travels through rural farmland in northern Tyler County, and crosses the Neches River into Jasper County.
