Beaches—East York (formerly Beaches—Woodbine) is a federal electoral district in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1988. This riding is situated east of Toronto's downtown. According to the 2016 Census, Beaches—East York has a population of 109,468 and is known for its ethnic diversity. It has the highest percentage of people of English (24.2%), Canadian (19.7%), and Scottish (18.9%) ethnic origins of all ridings in the City of Toronto. Since 2015, two-term Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith has represented Beaches—East York. At the 2019 federal elections, Erskine-Smith secured the largest margin of victory (20,204 votes) and the all-time largest share of the vote (57.2%) in Beaches—East York. Nathaniel Erskine-Smith
Nathaniel B. Erskine-Smith (born June 15, 1984) is a Canadian politician. A member of the Liberal Party, he is a Member of Parliament, representing Beaches-East York. Erskine-Smith became the youngest MP to be elected in the Greater Toronto Area on October 19, 2015, after a successful grassroots open nomination in December 2014. He successfully retained his seat in the 2019 and 2021 elections. Erskine-Smith sits on the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology. He also occupies an executive role on the committee of the Canadian Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) as a past president. Prior to entering politics, Erskine-Smith was a lawyer at a commercial litigation firm downtown Toronto. 2015 Canadian Federal Election
The 2015 Canadian federal election held on October 19, 2015, saw the Liberal Party, led by Justin Trudeau, win 184 seats, allowing it to form a majority government with Trudeau becoming the next prime minister. Matthew Kellway
Matthew Kellway (born December 10, 1964) is a Canadian economist and former politician. He was a New Democratic Member of Parliament for the Toronto riding of Beaches—East York from 2011 to 2015. In the 2018 municipal election he came in second in Ward 19 for the Toronto City Council. Background Kellway spent much of his childhood in Kingston. He has a degree in political science from Queen's University, and a Master of Industrial Relations degree from the University of Toronto. He also pursued graduate studies at York University. He worked as an economist and as a policy analyst with the Society of Energy Professionals. He was co-chair of the Toronto Energy Coalition, and chair of the St. John Catholic School Parent Council. The federal electoral redistribution of 2012 was a redistribution of electoral districts ("ridings") in Canada following the results of the 2011 Canadian census. As a result of amendments to the Constitution Act, 1867, the number of seats in the House of Commons of Canada increased from 308 to 338. The previous electoral redistribution was in 2003. Toronto—Danforth (formerly Broadview—Greenwood) is a provincial electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1999. Don River (Ontario)
The Don River is a watercourse in southern Ontario that empties into Lake Ontario, at Toronto Harbour. Its mouth was just east of the street grid of the town of York, Upper Canada, the municipality that evolved into Toronto, Ontario. The Don is one of the major watercourses draining Toronto (along with the Humber, and Rouge Rivers) that have headwaters in the Oak Ridges Moraine. The Don is formed from two rivers, the East and West Branches, that meet about north of Lake Ontario while flowing southward into the lake. The area below the confluence is known as the "lower Don", and the areas above as the "upper Don". The Don is also joined at the confluence by a third major branch, Taylor-Massey Creek.
