Mearim River
The Mearim River is a river in Maranhão state of northern Brazil. The river originates in the southern part of Maranhão, and drains north into the Baía de São Marcos, an estuary that also receives the Pindaré and Grajaú rivers, which are sometimes considered tributaries of the Mearim. The lower Mearim is known for its pororoca, or tidal bore. The Mearim is approximately 800 kilometers long, flowing through the marshlands of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. It meets the Atlantic Ocean at the Sao Marcos Bay, where it forms a common estuary with another river, Pindare. The Mearim's primary source of water is rain. Pindaré River
The Pindaré River is a river in Maranhão state of north-central Brazil. The Pindaré rises in the low hills which separate its basin from that of the Tocantins River to the south. In its lower reaches it is called the Pindaré-Mirim. It is a left tributary of the Mearim River, which it joins not far from that river's mouth in the Baía de São Marcos. The Serra do Tiracambu lies to the west, and separates the basin of the Pindaré from that of the Gurupí River. Pororoca
The Pororoca (, ) is a tidal bore, with waves up to high that travel as much as inland upstream on the Amazon River and adjacent rivers. Its name might come from the indigenous Tupi language, where it could translate into "great roar". It could be also a Portuguese version of the term ''poroc-poroc'', which in an indigenous' language was a way of expressing the act of destroying everything. It could be also a ''portmanteau'' of the words ''poroc'' (to take out, to tear away) and ''oca'' (house). It occurs at the mouth of the river where its waters meet the Atlantic Ocean.
