Bayelsa United FC is a football club based in Yenagoa, Bayelsa, Nigeria. They play in the second division of Nigerian football, the Nigeria National League. Their home games are played at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Ovom, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. 2008/09 season Due to torrential rains making the pitch unplayable, they played the 2007–2008 season in the Delta State town of Oghara. During the 2008–09 season, Bayelsa was forced to play three home games in Ibadan after crowd trouble in their derby with Ocean Boys. Then at the new year's break the team was suspended from continuing their league schedule despite being at the top of the table. This was due to outstanding debts and salaries. Samson Siasia Sports Stadium is a multi-use stadium located in the Yenagoa metropolis, Nigeria. It is currently used mostly for football matches and it is the home stadium of both Ocean Boys FC and the Bayelsa United. The stadium has a capacity of 5,000 people. Before 2009, it was known as the Yenagoa Township Stadium. It was rededicated in 2009 and was named after Samson Siasia. Bayelsa is one of the states in the South-South region of Nigeria, located in the core of the Niger Delta region. Bayelsa State was created in 1996 and was carved out from Rivers State, making it one of the newest states in the federation. Yenagoa is the capital city of Bayelsa State with most parts to have fallen within the high-risk of floods, suspects to occur annually. It shares a boundary with Rivers State to the East and Delta State to the west, with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean dominating its southern borders. It has a total area of 10, 773 km2. Henry Onyemanze Nwosu (born 14 June 1963) is a former Nigerian footballer turned manager. Career Nwosu spent his career at home with New Nigeria Bank (NNB) of Benin City and African Continental Bank (ACB) of Lagos. He also played for ASEC Mimosas FC of Ivory Coast and Racing FC Bafoussam of Cameroon. International career A gifted midfielder, Nwosu was the youngest member of Nigeria's victorious 1980 African Nations Cup squad, and scored the only goal for Nigeria at the 1980 Olympics. Kali Gwegwe (born 2 July 1969 in Oguta, Imo State, Nigeria) is the former Chairman of Bayelsa United F.C., a Nigerian Premier League outfit based in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. Prior to his appointment, he was the Chairman of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria's (YSFON) Bayelsa State chapter. He is reputed to have groomed the bulk of all the new generation footballers (1998–2006) that come out of Bayelsa State—the home state of Finidi George and Samson Siasia. The board of Bayelsa United that Kali Gwegwe was chairing was dissolved in controversial circumstances in November 2006.
