Battle Of Vaasa
The Battle of Vaasa was fought between the Kingdom of Sweden and the Russian Empire during the Finnish War (1808-1809). While the Swedish army was celebrating its victory at Nykarleby, another Swedish force, led by Johan Bergenstråhle, landed at Vaasa. Adlercreutz had forgot about this landing and didn't send any troops to help Bergenstråhle. The Swedes, numbering 1,300–1,400 men, landed just outside Vaasa, but the Russians, strengthened by the arrival of the Russian main army turned out to be too strong. After some harsh street battles, the Russians lost 37 killed, 82–113 wounded (five officers) and, according to certain sources, 53 captured; in total 150–172 men. The Swedes had lost 68 men killed and 204 captured (including the commander); of these, 101 men were wounded. The remaining forces retreated northwards, to the Swedish main army at Nykarleby, and created the Sixth wedishbrigade. The Finnish War ( sv, Finska kriget, russian: Финляндская война, fi, Suomen sota) was fought between the Gustavian era, Kingdom of Sweden and the Russian Empire from 21 February 1808 to 17 September 1809 as part of the Napoleonic Wars. As a result of the war, the eastern third of Sweden was established as the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire. Johan Bergenstråhle
Johan Bergenstråhle (13 May 1756 – 7 March 1840 in Stockholm) was a Swedish military officer who participated in Russo-Swedish War (1788-1790), and the Finnish War. In June 1808, he was sent as a colonel of the Swedish Army, with 1,000 men and four cannon to Vasa in order to retake the city from the Russians. The expedition failed and Bergenstråhle was wounded and captured on 25 June. Nikolay Ivanovich Demidov (19 August 1773 – 4 June 1833) was a Russian General of Infantry, Adjutant-General and senator. Life From a noble family in Ryazan province, he was the son of Brigadier Ivan Ivanovich Demidov. As was the custom of the time his birth was recorded with the Preobrazhensky Lifeguard regiment and three years later promoted to Sergeant. He entered active service on 1 January 1790, rising to captain in 1798 and colonel in 1799. Battle Of Nykarleby
The Battle of Nykarleby was fought between Sweden and the Russian Empire during the Finnish War of 1808–1809. When Carl Johan Adlercreutz continued his summer offensive, he saw an excellent opportunity to encircle the Russian main army at the town of Nykarleby. The Swedish offensive began on Midsummer's Eve, but the Russian forces had already evacuated the city and pulled back to Vaasa, where another Swedish force, commanded by Johan Bergenstråhle was landing. Adlercreutz engaged several smaller Russian units who were guarding the Russian retreat. The Russians were led by Jankovitch. He pulled back over the bridge in the town centre, and then burned the bridge. On the way to Vaasa they encountered a smaller Swedish unit led by Major Carl von Otter and a small battle ensued. The Västerbotten Regiment ( sv, Västerbottens regemente), designations I 19, I XIX, I 20 and I 20/Fo 61, was a Swedish Army infantry regiment that traced its origins back to the 16th century.
